one thing i need to add is... i can receive mails if they're sent to "machine.domainname.com" but not if they're sent to "domainname.com". what can i do to fix that?

You need to update the DNS-Zonefile for domainname.com. Just add an MX-record according to your setup and voila, email@domainname.com will work. regards, Stefan
