[SLE] hp Web JetAdmin on SuSE
I've been trying to get the HP Web JetAdmin working on SuSE for hours now. I can't get it to create a queue, and I really don't understand what it is doing. The thing I leas understand is how the UIDs in the Web interface map to the UIDs in the etc/passwd. I also don't see any drivers in the list. Pleas help! I am not going to be running linux long if my boss dosen't see me producing. Yea, it's bogus that HP released this for "Red Hat Linux" We need a Fu^hine standard! The could say complies with Linux standard ###.##.r# or what ever. Still if you have this working, HELP!!!! I would recommend using lprng to print to you printers, especially if they are on the network with jetdirect cards. These are well supported with lprng. Lprng is in the N series packages. The only problem is that YAST can't set the connection to a network device. I configure my /etc/printcap by using YAST and tell it that the printer is on /dev/lp0 (or something like that) and then change this in /etc/printcap by hand to the network address. The entry then looks something like this: lp|deelder|Laserjet 4000 computerroom:\ :lp=192.168.1.176%9100:\ :sd=/var/spool/lpd/deelder:\ :lf=/var/log/lpd/deelder.log:\ :af=/var/log/lpd/deelder.act:\ :if=/var/lib/apsfilter/bin/PS_1200dpi-a4-auto-mono-1200:\ :mx#0:\ :sh: 192.168.1.176 is the ip-address of my printer. Jetdirect listens at port 9100. If you have an external jetdirect with multiple ports the first one listens at 9100, the second at 9101 etc., all with the same ip-address. I also changed the name from PS-1200dpi-a4 etc... to something people can remember (in this case deelder, a dutch poet). Dontt forget to rename the spool directory in /var/spool/lpd too if you do this. I also have webadmin installed, but I only use it to look at the printer, not to configure the queues. BTW there is a small bug in apsfilter in SuSE 63 if you use it with W9x clients that print via Samba to an HP postscript printer on your SuSE server. Instead of the printout you get the postscript itself printed as ascii if you use the automatic filter. I have a small patch for apsfilter that fixes this.
