Kernel Panic when installing 64bit on dual opteron
Hi! I have a problem with dual Opteron (244) server with 1.8Tb RAID 5 disk and 8Gb mem. It boots with the Knoppix CD as well as SuSE 9.2 Gnome 32bit live eval. But I'm trying to install the FTP version of SuSE 9.2 Pro 64bit on this computer - and I'm not getting anywhere. I have tried both the ftp DVD as well as the mini-CD. And I get the same results with both: i.e. Kernel panic. Everything is OK after boot, but when the installer loads the kernel, then I get kernel panic. I've tried all the options (safe mode, ACPI=off, manual installation etc.) but always the same problem. The DVD md5 sums at least matched to the ones reported and I get the same problem with 2 medias. Any ideas? -- HG

is this a FSC 810 - in that case we're working on it together with FSC, there's nothing we can help right now. Otherwise see below.

Use the patchcd from ftp.suse.com/pub/people/aj/PatchCD and use that CD for boot/installation, Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger, aj@suse.de, http://www.suse.de/~aj SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126

I'm having large problems with downloading that... the downloads just quit (and are very slow...). Mirror anywhere? I also just tested the 64bit Live eval of the 9.2 and I got the same kernel panic during the start of the installation. So the 64bit kernel in the installation is faulty? -- Hugo.

Everywhere. That directory should be really mirrored on any ftp.suse.com mirror.

The 64-bit LiveEval has the same kernel as the others.

It has one issue with USB together with some BIOS versions - try disabling USB support for installation, this might help also, Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger, aj@suse.de, http://www.suse.de/~aj SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126

Thanks a lot! The server is up and running and it still booted after the first updates I just did. The current installation as well as the live-eval for 64bit 9.2 Pro doesn't work on this computer. The PatchCD does. Maybe you should really publish the patchCD also - or will I get side effects from the PatchCD? I think there must be others who have the same problem... Thanks again! -- HG

I should have added: There are no known side effects from using the PatchCD in comparision to downloading the patches directly via YOU, so go ahead and use it, Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger, aj@suse.de, http://www.suse.de/~aj SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126

I don't know if this is the same problem I had, but I had to turn off USB temporarily (i.e. just for the install) in the bios before I could install 9.2 - Richard
