Hi all.

You'll need to know exactly what your modem is, first: Mfr, etc. Then, perhaps. ...CH

I see you're a student of ontology. I guess that means vague, imprecise questions is your field. Then I can offer a vague, imprecise answer: it depends (Specifically, it depends on the model of your modem. WinModem isn't a brand, is it Lucent? Conexant? Which? There are drivers for some linmodems, not for others)

Are there any package to solve this kind of problems? The first thing to do is work out what the chipset of the modem is. Linmodem is like saying "PC" - it is a generic term that covers a lot of chipsets within that class.
Now then, I cannot help you on this problem, but a bit more info would be helpful for others on the list. They may need more info, and the "command outputs" I ask for below may/may not help, but I would start with this when trying to diagnose such a situation: Make: Compaq [you stated this above, good :)] Model: Output of the following commands: lspci pnpdump Hope this helps in some way :) Jon

Jon, well, if I tell you my modem is Intel, what magic would you suggest me to make that damn modem working under 8.2? Anyway, why on this earth are all these modem so hard to be recognize by any SuSe version automatically? Thanks for any help.
