Hi, I went to install SuSE 7.3 and not only does my PS/2 mouse not work, but when I unplug all mice (I have none whatsoever plugged into the system) the installation script never gets to the "choose a mouse..." screen. The serial mouse doesn't work either. However, I plugged in a USB mouse (after all the hardware selection had been completed) and lo and behold- that mouse works! Which is weird, because it certainly wasn't on the system when I booted it... thus, I should have seen the "choose a mouse..." screen. Worse, if there is no mouse it's impossible to use the keyboard only because even though one can tab to different fields, the arrow keys don't always work. Now- after the install- I cannot get a PS/2 mouse to respond in the X environment at all. I checked /etc/modules.conf and saw the alias char-major-10 psaux was set to alias char-major-10 off (I think). I changed it to look like the previous line, rebooted, but that was no help. Can I run a PS/2 mouse with SuSE 7.3? -- -Mike suse-list@Schwager.com
Hi, Just a clarification... ...the reason why your USB mouse worked although it wasn't on the system initially is because SuSE 7.3 supports pluggable USB devices. USB Devices, specifically Mouse devices, don't need anything really special to work taht is the beauty of them. When I installed SuSE 7.3 on my laptop, my PS/2 and touchpad didn't work intially. I finished the install with the keyboard and when I was finished and it booted into KDE my mouse was working, even the scroll button. On all the PC's I have installed so far I have never seen the Mouse Option, this could be because of the new type of Install that SuSE is using besides all my Mouse Devices work perfectly and I have never had to tweak anything. It could also be because of the new XFree86 4.1.0 that comes with SuSE. Regards Q On Friday 09 November 2001 08:16, Michael Schwager wrote:

Thanks for the reply, Quinton. Well it seems as if Sax and Yast get confused over the mouse... after doing the nasty thing and editing the /etc/X11/X86Config file I have gotten the ps2 mouse to work, but Yast still wants the USB mouse... then when I'm done with him Sax goes back to the USB mouse. I think SuSE kinda screwed up with the mouse configuration...

Sax2 adds no value to the installation of XF86, it is a crock. You could try using the standard XFree86 tool, xf86cfg. -- Regards Cliff

SAX2 works fine with XFree 4.x.... Maybe a little less whinging is in order here ? I mean, just because YOU can't get 7.3 to work doesn't mean the rest of the world can't... Mine works just fine.
