[opensuse] Sound error in MPlayer
I have a WMV file that I have run on MPlayer. The video is displayed as it should be, but there is an audio error, as follows: ***** Error <05> (AO OSS) audio_setup: Can't open audio device /dev/dsp: Device or resource busy ***** MPlayer runs DVDs (the only other use I have made of MPlayer) properly, including audio. What is this error message telling me? -- Stan Goodman Qiryat Tiv'on Israel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

To know the reason, execute as follows;
# mplayer -v foo.wmv
If you can't find out, post the messages here.
Regards,
I had first to change the filename, which contained parentheses that bash wouldn't tolerate. Bill Gates has many ways of bludgeoning people to use his crap. After that, the command proceeded as advertised, and showed a lot of complaints. Apparently I lack the proper codec for the audio, though video is OK (!). It can't find a configuration file that it wants; I'm glad it plays DVDs. It also has trouble. with fonts; perhaps the clip has subtitles that need fonts, although DVD subtitles have not given trouble. I cannot guess why it is looking for a joystick. You're using OSS as audio-driver and with that only one program can use /dev/dsp at once. In your case, the device is already used by another program, e.g. artsd, esd or some such. Either terminate the other program to free the device or use (for both the other program and mplayer) a different audio-driver, e.g. alsa (if you're using the ALSA driver), arts(d), esd, ... In fact, the error message implied something like that. But I have no idea what other process might have been using the driver. I tried closing down the browser, for example, because I had been watching film clips on CNN, but it didn't help. I also do not understand why only this problematic clip has trouble finding a free driver, while DVDs and CNN clips have no trouble at all. But thanks for your information. I know of no other way of initiating that command. Further investigation on your part would reveal: man fuser NAME fuser - identify processes using files or sockets And I don't believe the terminal cares, but you might. While a lot of the documentation is written at levels that fail to provide *complete* understanding for the novice and not so novice, it will give you a basic idea what is going on. And I do. What I was saying is that entering <fuser /dev/dsp> at a prompt produced no output at all, but a return to the prompt. I interpret that as meaning that there is nothing to report. On the chance that the command needs superuser status to do its thing, I did that, with the same result.

Right. So the conclusion has to be that all is well. not necessarily. You found nothing using /dev/dsp. The only conclusion I see is that you have a wmv clip that your setup of mplayer cannot play.
Except that this clip can't be run with audio, although the (Windows user) who sent it to me hears a sound track.
Do you have other wmv clips that mplayer plays successfully? show the output of: cat ~/.mplayer/mplayer.conf and: Thanks for trimming :^) -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Probably a sound daemon, i.e. artsd, esd or some such. You then should use that as 'audio output' in mplayer, see 'mplayer -ao help'. -dnh -- "But you should never let rules overrule common sense - if you do, you end up doing stupid things" -- Linus Torvalds -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thank you. That looks very helpful. I've run through the list of drivers, with the command: mplayer -ao <drivername> <filename> with complete silence. Interestingly, there were no error messages as there were when I was running MPlayer through its GUI. I wonder if the error is an artifact of the GUI in combination with some peculiarity of the clip, although that doesn't seem likely. In answer to Patrick's question, no I do not have other clips. I use MPlayer for DVD movies (where I am overjoyed with MPlayer's performance), and am not looking for clips; someone sent me this one unbidden. I'm prepared to let this matter lie as it is, since it has no effect on my normal use of the application. It would have been nice to know why this clip doesn't behave as it should, but there is a limit to everything. Works here too. I think the other clip is a trap for the unwary. I won't waste any more of my time, or that of others, with it. -- Stan Goodman Qiryat Tiv'on Israel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

or you could provide the failing clip/wmv for perusal/testing by others? -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
