Hello, I like to dial in from work on my PC. But I like to make sure that only *I* can dial in. The system is SuSE 8.0 and I have a ISDN Fritz Card. Can I allow only my number on the card dirctly, or is there an other way to block all but my number? How can I protect aginst a faked called ID ? (Ok, my system is not fort knox - just my test machine but it would be interesting to know). Have a nice weekend, Michael

Dunno about that one, but you could set up a dial-back system: You dial the box and log in The remote box hangs up and dials you back Since the number the remote box uses to dial back is set in advance, you know it can only come to you.
How can I protect aginst a faked called ID ?
I understand it's practically imposible to do this without the help of the teleco provider. Dylan -- "Sweet moderation Heart of this nation Desert us not, we are Between the wars"

Thanks Dylan, I have protected my analog modem, which is also on the test box this way. AFAIK there is a smartet way for ISDN, there must be somewhere/how an option to allow only certian number.. This is what I am looking for. practially to protecet without the teleco prov. or practially impossible to fake the caller id (didn't tried it but this seems to be possible) Michael

I was thinking of the latter - people here will be able to give better info I expect, but the way I understand it the CLI originates at the exchange the source line is connected to and is used for routing the return leg of the call handshake: so the teleco would need to do the faking, and if it was faked the teleco would need to know so the correct routing can be done. As I have worked for a big maker of exchanges, I can tell you that what you say is correct. It is the exchange that sets the CLI, and the software in it is not designed for manipulation: I'm not aware that it could be possible, and even if it were the access would be disabled for normal operators. All this means that such a manipulation need a determined attempt high up. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
Hello, thanks for all the information about the CLI - maybe one of you can help me on the problem that I would like to block all but one number for a dial in? Guess that this is the bigger gap than to fear that the calling number is faked. Thanks Michael :-)

Assuming you are using mgetty, check the files under /etc/mgetty. I can't remember which file it is (and I don't have it installed here at home ;-) ), but I believe you will find what you seek there. -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Web Address: http://www.mydestiny.net/~joe_morris Registered Linux user 231871 God said, I AM that I AM.
