[opensuse] PS/2 - USB adapter and Linux
I have been using a PS/2 KVM switch with Linux for several years. One problem is that the mouse will go all wonky¹ when switched between systems. This is a known problem with Linux (though not Windows or OS/2), but it apparently doesn't happen with switched USB mouse. I ran a KVM switch for years between a Linux computer and a windows computer. I never had any issues switching. Same here. I still use a PS/2 KVM, in fact, and it works just fine switching between Linux boxes. On my Cybex switch, there is a 'configuration' option (entered through a hotkey combination the KVM uses) to tell it what kind of mouse is used. I *rarely* have an issue where the mouse will freak out if the KVM isn't set to the machine in question when it's started up - but even that doesn't happen every time. To OP's question - I don't know that connecting the PS/2 output from such a KVM to a USB convertor will help, particularly - the issue is the lack of signal continuity, IIRC, and a USB converter isn't likely to provide that. Then again, though, it might. I do have one of those on a system that has no PS/2 ports (Keyboard or mouse), and it does work fine. I have 2 PS/2 KVM Switch working with a pretty hybrid systems (Windows, Linuxes, MacOS, etc...). Occasionally, the mouse doesn't connect with the booted system and need to switch manually among system and reboot Linux system to be able to recognize the PS/2 mouse attached to KVM. I have been able to work with dedicated mouse and keyboard on the Linux box with this particular issue by switching manually on the key button for the proper box. You will miss the Scroll+Number to switch on. Like mentioned above, if you mean the converter is to be used by mouse and keyboard with one box with no PS/2 port is OK despite you will need to switch among systems manually (key button on KVM, if it has it). Like Jim mentioned, everything depends on signal continuity. Some of these converter are not efficient as published and tend to fail (keyboard or mouse could delay to respond or not). So, I would not say is a perfect solution. Regards, -- R. Likewise. I have a _mechanical_ KVM switch and used it for many years between a couple of Linux machines and a Windows machine. There never was any problem switching the ps/2 mouse and keyboard between the Linux machines. Occasionally the Windows machine was uncooperative and needed a mouse or keyboard plugged in directly. For a while. Then it worked with the KVM. For a while.
