[SLE] [ot] recommend Cat5 cable RJ45M to RJ45M?
I am sorry for the off topic question, but you all are my networking experts! I have two PCs that are currently connected by a 6 foot cross-over ethernet cable (cat 5?) through my 10Mbit ethernet cards. I have moved my second PC about 30 feet away from my main PC and want to network them together again. Any recommendations on pre-made Cat5 cabling, or things I should watch out for? I have a Female-Female RJ45 connector, so I was going to purchase a regular 50 foot Cat5 cable, not a cross-over, and connect it to my existing cross-over cable. The reason I ask, is that I am going to order this cable from a vendor on www.shopper.com , but there appears to be *so* much variability in the pricing - especially depending on what I type in. For instance, I have prices from $9 to $33 for a 50 foot length of cable. I must be doing something incorrectly or at the very least I am missing something. thanks! I went to Comp usa , bought a 1000 foot roll, crimp on tool and cromp connecters. Beldon cable. I have also bought no name cables from pc shows and swap meets. All have worked , execept one home made cabel that I had to cut the terminal and recrimp another one. Apperently I had pressed to hard when stripping the outer covering and it cut into the inner wires. A new crimp connecter solved that problem. Funny how the network worked , but only that "leg" was realy slow. A cable swap narrowed it down to the cable. At 01:07 PM 5/19/2000 GMT, Stuart Hall wrote:

A LOT chaeper than Comp USA , unfortunaly Home Depot is realy out of the way for me. Comp USA is a few Subway stops ,with HD I would have to drive out side manahttan. Any way I allready own it , and still have 3/4 of the roll. At 04:01 PM 5/19/2000 -0500, Admiral Michael H. Collins wrote:

That's a great price. Here in Germany I just got the Conrad Electronic catalogue. A 150m (ca 450ft) roll of Cat5 cable costs 199.95DM (ca 100$). Or by the meter (ca 3ft) it's 1.95DM (ca 1$) per meter, so your 1000' roll would set me back about about 300$ here. BTW the RJ45 plug costs 4.95DM (ca 2.50$) each and the crimper costs 79.95 DM (ca 40$). Later! Thanks to everyone here for patiently answering my networking question. I got my 50foot cross-over cable installed last night ($10 including shipping from onvia.com) and it works perfectly. Now I can run my slot car track from my main PC... :-) Stuart On Fri, 19 May 2000 13:07:58 GMT, you wrote:

Slot Car track! Wow.....Kewl!!! I haven't seen one of those since I was knee-high to a grasshopper! I may just put one of those into my "Projects-To-Do when I'm old and grey" lists. (Not that they are that far off anymore.) :-( -- Regards Don Hansford ECKYTECH COMPUTING Surfing the Net (without crashing) With SuSE 6.4 Linux (Thanx Linus!)
