are you talking about an external or internal cable modem?
my 7.2 works just great with an external modem...DHCP gives me an IP just
like advertised

This has been no sweat, no strain since Suse 6.1. I use a Linksys BEFSR41 between the external cable modem and all the boxen using DHCP. George On Thursday 08 August 2002 05:08 pm, Les Hollis wrote:

I use a BEFW11S4, which also has wireless capability. On my desktop I assign a static IP because I use my desktop system as an SMTP server. I also connect my Linux laptop with either a cable or a wireless. The non- wireless version is available for well under $100 US mail order, and the wireless for a bit over $100. The only problem I had was with one version of Netscape where I was not able to use it to configure the router. Konquerer works fine as does Netscape 6.2. On 8 Aug 2002 at 17:28, George Curran wrote:

My connection is a Cable Modem Ajato/TVA in São Paulo, Brasil, and the configuration is very simple . I am allready has 2 diferent models of modem here, and both works fine . The first was a Motorola Surfboard SB3100D, and the second is a USR CMX . I'm just configures the network board ( eth0 ) to get IP with DHCP, and set DNS to dinamicaly update yourself all with Yast and everything works fine at first try . The only possible insue is about the security system used by the provider ( AJato ), it is based on the MAC address of network card, if you change the board or the entire machine you MUST call to suport and tell the new MAC address of the new board, until that it is impossible to get a valid IP with the conection . Any further information you can contact me . Fábio Rabelo
BTW: Before I got my router I had SuSE from 5.1 on up connecting directly to the cable modem. In 7.0 and following just configure dhclient through YaST and take the defaults. Prior to 7.0, some of the networking scripts had some problems (in my case with multiple NICS), but with 7.0 or 7.1 and following everything worked out of the box. I have sent a message to the list apologizing for what appears to be a mistake on my part, since I cannot find any copy of a message asking for contributions to SuSE. This is my second and last copy of that apology. I will be sorry to lose SuSE, if, in fact, it really needs contributions to survive. I hope that is not the case. --doug At 09:09 08/12/2002 -0700, Ben Rosenberg wrote:

I have looked at what you called the "World Dominion" thread that you posted, and I do not see anything that I said that should be reprehensible to anybody. As a matter of fact, it seems to have little to do with me at all. I think, if you look at my "history" you will find that I have asked technical questions, and when able, have provided technical answers, on this list, on RedHat, and on Mandrake. I have generally found the people on this list somewhat friendlier than on the other two. Is that going away? Just please clear your database of anything with my name in it, and I will refrain from contributing anything more, good or bad. At 09:09 08/12/2002 -0700, Ben Rosenberg wrote:

Fair enough. However, I believe that the post to which this responded should also be considered unwelcome. It is this other posting whose author has just qualified for my black list. One of the rules, gentlemen, is that an entirely capitalized posting is considered yelling, and rude. I don't personally find that the addition of profanity increases its offensiveness. A few points: 1) The open source world is a cooperative effort. That's how we got all this great software in the first place. SuSE has certainly contributed to open source. What I remember is USB and some accelerated video card support work; I'm sure there's much more. 2) SuSE has historically provided a great distribution which makes it possible for many people to successfully use open source software, which is available for free. It seems churlish to withhold information on account of SuSE being a profit-making enterprise. 3) I am a little puzzled that there's an issue with cable modems. From the non-flaming responses here, it doesn't seem like there is, but then again I do keep seeing the issue crop up. I haven't played with it myself. Can anyone enlighten me as to what the problem is? Thanks! -- David Benfell, LCP benfell@parts-unknown.org --- Resume available at http://www.parts-unknown.org/resume.html

Just had to chime in with my puzzlement too. Not quite sure what we are being asked to contribute to. I have a cable modem connected - been using a Terayon cable modem with SuSE for about 3 years now (some other brand for about a year before that). Connected direct to my computer, I can get my local IP as assigned from my ISP (Chello in the Netherlands). I put a Smoothwall router/firewall in between my desktop and my cable modem. It requests it's IP from my ISP, and then assigns my SuSE box an IP from it's private range (192.168.x.x). It has always worked smoothly. The cable modem has probably been the simplest bit to set up on Linux since I started back in the days of SuSE6.x. It even works better in Linux than in Windows. C.

I don't know but usually SDB articles topics come from installation support requests. I think what Stephen is looking for are any peculiarities with cable (e.g., subscriber IDs) that weren't automatically handled by yast2. If there aren't any, that's great. There definitely used to be a couple of years ago though, esp. with dhcp. -- -ckm
My appologies to the list for the flame and profanity. I think I need to apologize to the list. I do not know why I wrote such a memo. Obviously the memo to which I replied did not seem to contain any request for donations. I apologize to all of you. I do not even recall what it was that angered me, but I assume it was something in another email and I became confused, or sleepy, or something. I think this list is great, and I have a fine regard for all. You have all been very helpful, even when the reply was to someone else, but I benefited. Thanx, guys and gals! (On the other hand, if SuSE really needs to beg, I guess they are on the way out. I hope that's not the case.) BTW, I'm not on cable, but on ADSL, which is quite similar in connection-- you get on via a router or a switch, and a 10/100 network card--and I had no difficulty at all. SuSE figured most of it out for me. --Doug McGarrett At 14:04 08/09/2002 -0500, Curtis Rey wrote:

The only problems we have been experiencing (and these are all with customers contacting the helpline) are when people have a router between the cable modem and their network, and the router isn't handing out DHCP addresses at all. Has anyone managed to get a setup like that working? -- Stephen Patterson Whom computers would destroy, they must first drive mad.

Did you try to instal and run a package called "dhcprelay" ?? If it not work, you can use a dhcp server in the linux box itself ! Fábio Rabelo

I have (again) 7.2 professional (this also worked with 7.2 personal) PC
has 2 NIC's. First one is attached directly to cable modem (thru a hub) and
DHCP works great. Second one is attched to an SMC 7004BR Barricade
Router. It would not DHCP no matter what I tried. Since I 'manage' the
router, I statically set an IP on the SuSE box for that NIC. see eth1

cable modem and their network, and the router isn't handing out DHCP addresses at all. Has anyone managed to get a setup like that working?

I've implemented several small networks using the Linksys BEFSR41 router/switch. Every setup was trivial, and the networks have been trouble-free. On the first one, I scratched my head a bit before I realized the obvious: I connected the PC to the router, got a DHCP address, and logged in to the router's admin menu with a browser. This was necessary to obtain the router's external MAC address, which the provider then required. Once the provider was provisioned with the MAC address, the router was plugged into the cable modem, and the admin status screen told me it had successfully negotiated an IP address via DHCP. Elated, I attempted to browse the web, but no-go. After a few minutes of head-scratching, I released and re-negotiated the PC's DHCP lease, and this time, in addition to an IP address, I was given default DNS servers. Duh! Providers in this area have evolved from MAC-based authentication, to hostname-based authentication, to their current MAC-(of the cable modem itself) authentication. So currently, the setup is just plain and simple DHCP. Another thought... Just with SuSE 8, I've had problems with DHCP negotiation (SuSE 8 is the client). It has appeared to be an early timeout in dhcpcd. I ended up making several tweaks, but the one that seemed to resolve the problem permanently was an edit to /etc/dhclient.conf: Change initial-interval 2; to initial-interval 5; HTH, Rick Green
With SuSe 8.0 and Yast2 i get a little problem with the password. My ISP is using a special caracter @ in the password and yast will not recognize it. I've put another caracter at the place of the @ and edit the config file (i don't remember the name just now) with an editor to get it to work. I have eth0 in the internt card option and mode PPP via Ethernet The config of eth0 is very simple with Yast, i have choose DHCP (It is possible to have a fast intenet adress with mty ISP but i don't need it and it's costing so i don't have it.) You must put the hostname and domain name that give you your ISP and the DNS and again the domain name in the search domain option (to the right of the first DNS) Le Jeudi 08 Août 2002 23.59, Stephen Patterson a écrit :
