laptop question: USB mouse and keyboard
Haven't found the answer to this one on the web. If I want to plug in a USB keyboard and mouse, do I need xorg config entries, or does the hotplugging system handle that for me? TIA, Jim

Yes and yes. I set mine up (on pro 9.3) so long ago and with so little problem with it, that I really don't remember much about it. So I'm educatedly guessing here. If you have the USB modules installed and working, and if your hotplug system is working, then just plugging it in will work... it always has for me. You need to have an entry in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file for your mouse. Here's mine: Section "InputDevice" Identifier "usbmouse" Driver "mouse" Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice" Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2" Option "ButtonNumber" "5" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" EndSection Your protocol might be different. Also in your xorg.conf in the "Files" Section, you'll need to chain in the Identifier from the above, e.g.: InputDevices "/dev/usbmouse" and: Section "ServerLayout" ... InputDevice "usbmouse" "Corepointer" ... EndSection I always meant to go back and tweak these settings, but the mouse has worked so flawlessly while other stuff hasn't, that I haven't bothered. Please let the group know if the above worked for you and/or if you needed to make changes. Share the knowledge. I use the Logitech Trackman Wheel (three button optical ball mouse with wheel) and the Dynex DX MKB101 keyboard (both usb devices). They can be hot plugged without problems, and they work with Suse 10 out of the box without additional config or fuss. -- Kind regards, M Harris <><

Yes. :) /serious mode Assuming you're using a newer version of SUSE (10.0 / 10.1) and a fairly decent laptop, then you should be able to plugin and go. Have you tried this? On my main laptop (10.1) I have never tried to plug in a keyboard, but I often plug in a USB Kidz Mouse for my rugrats. Ever since 9.3, I've always simply had the message come up and ask me if I want to configure the mouse (which I deny) and then I just start using it. AFAIK, the software "hotplug" has been deprecated and has been replaced with udev, which has some benefits in terms of speed and accessibility over hotplug. If you're in KDE, press CTRL + ESC to bring up a list of system processes (kind of like CTRL + ALT + DEL in Wintendo) and you should not see hotplug in the list. Scrolling down you should see udevd in there. -- kai ponte www.perfectreign.com

On 10.1 I just plug in and start typing and mousing away. Hans
