[opensuse] How To plan migration from v10.3 -> v11 *and* Smart -> Zypper ?
I have an OpenSuse 10.3 box, sync-ing with a bunch of repos using Smart Package Manager. With OpenSuse 11 on the way, I'm trying to figure out the "best" (= safe? = easy?) way to migrate/upgrade my current setup. I'd like to end up using the new Zypper/Yast2 under v11. What are the steps I should take to (1) prepare for the upgrade to "Release 11", and (2) switchover from Smart to Zypper/Yast2? Thanks, Wil -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

IMHO, download CD or DVD, burn on disk, reboot computer, follow the prompts. To make sure that computer will boot fine you can use LiveCD. If you want to try in advance, the latest is: ftp://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/projects/FactoryLiveCDs and KDE LiveCD works fine here. -- Regards, Rajko http://en.opensuse.org/Portal needs helpful hands. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Correction the latest is here: ftp://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/opensuse/distribution/11.0-RC1/iso/cd -- Regards, Rajko http://en.opensuse.org/Portal needs helpful hands. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Using the CD/DVD method you describe, would I need to downgrade anything first, or add additional repositories for the "upgrade"? Of, just use the defaults on the installer DVD? The LiveCD offers only installation, which is not good if you want to update existing system, but if you have, or you can create, empty space on hard disk you can try installation. For upgrade you should use normal installation CD or DVD, not LiveCD. I recommended LiveCD only to check hardware compatibility as that is the only part of installation, so far I know, that can make trouble. Keep in mind that this is still RC1 version. There will be, for sure, more changes in next 20 days, so test with current LiveCD in link below is not final. When you check and something doesn't work than you can come and ask particular questions. BTW, the latest LiveCD is now in normal repositories: ftp://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/opensuse/distribution/11.0-RC1/iso/cd The previous link still has LiveCD, but it is now obsoleted by openSUSE-11.0-RC1-KDE4-LiveCD-i386.iso -- Regards, Rajko http://en.opensuse.org/Portal needs helpful hands. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Sounds like that's my plan. Thanks for the advice! Wil -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Using the installer DVD you don't need to change anything, because it uses (will use, it is not released yet) the new repos for 11.0 and ignore the existing repos you may have configured (Smart configuration is also ignored). I think that old repos are left in the configuration renamed to something like old or deactivated or something, I don't remember the details. One warning: with upgrades you should always do a full backup. Thus, if things go bad you can restore your previously working system, retry, or install fresh. It is also a good idea for fresh installs, of course. Always, that is. - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
