[SLE] SuSE distribution packaging
I don't know how SuSE packaged the 6.3 distribution, but I suppose someone ought to speak up about the packaging of 6.2. It comes in a cardboard folder with slots for the 6 CDROMs that comprise the distribution. The trouble is that the CDROMs slip out of the slots very easily and tend to fall out if you slant the folder even a little bit backwards or sometimes sideways. I'm not necessarily objecting to any use of cardboard for the package; even this one might have worked if there were retainer flaps for each CDROM. The rule for good packaging is simple: the CDROMs come out easily when you want them to and don't come out when you don't want them to. Anyone else observe the same thing? In 6.3 they cut the slots diagonnaly and it helps some. "Paul W. Abrahams" wrote:

Seems that I'm not alone. I'm glad I spoke up - perhaps someone at SuSE (hi, Lenz!!) is listening. Paul -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

Hell yea. Ever see the SuSE Linux 5.3 distro packaging? That is some sweet little plastic CD-ROM case their my freind. Nothing better packaged then the 5.3, hands down, that is the good old days. 6.3 has the card board to, it also gets fibers on the back of the CD-ROMs. The issuse that is casing SuSE to move to cardboard I bet is that plastic for 6 CD-ROMs would be really BULKLY and would drive up the price of packaging to the customer. How are you going to make a 6 CD-ROM plastic case? When I opened up SuSE Linux 6.3, I was expecting a nice plastic cd case, but pull out this cardboard cut out and really got me thinking about it. It doesn't really matter to me, either way, after I get the distro installed and get all the good package installed the distro media goes up on my book self, rarely touched with ever again.. unless I get the joy of doing another install : ) Ever see the Solaris 7 disk set, it has about the same amount of disk, but they put it in this plastic folder type CD case, it looks nice, but is real bulking and flat, hard carry around all day. It is about the size of a peice of printer paper. It is nice, but looks REALLY weird and can't really put it in a cd tower with all the other Unix media/software. Jack

I would be more than happy to pay a buck or two more for a more decent package! I would suggest little plastic folders. Paper-like in the back (soft, protecting the CD), transparent plastic on top with a flap to get the CD out (one per CD of course) with two holes on the left side so that you can put them in a book or something. I don't know the exact words for it, but if anyone has seen the Novell Support Connection CD sets, they'll know what I mean! That way, you can put all distro's together in one handy-to-carry booklet. IU lile the paper 6.3 one better , the 5.3 plastic holder , you had to realy press the cd in to lock them, and iff a few spokes broke off then the would not hold in. Now with the paper 6.3 holder I can place the two floppys in the midle and put a ruber band aroun it to keep them all together , and they now all take a litle less space.

Hey, the card board package isn't that bad when I think about it. 1 it has part of the FAQ on the cover, because it has room. It can hold the 2 floppy disk that come with it. Plus, have you ever opened up the entire thing and then went and put it in front of someones face? Very impresses, 6 cd in this big only row all professinal looking compare to those other OS with their pathic 1 cd set... The thing is about 4-5 feet long when full opened up. It's nearly perdect. The only improvement I'd like to see is a downward curve in the diagonal slit so as to allow a finger go into the centre hole, to make extraction of a disc that much easier. It's just a matter of having the die curved where the centre hole is, with a diameter of approx 150% of the hole radius so the cdrom will not hitch on the back tab. Lenz, do you get my drift? If it must be cardboard to save $$ there are other ways. I use IRIX at work and the 6.5 upgrade came on 6 cds with 2 extra cds w/info on them and a nice small install guide. The cds were in plain slip covers and everything was together in a nice cardboard 2 peice box that slid apart holding the disks. Kinda like some of the floppy disk packaging you see with the 10 disk packages. It is also another place for colorful logos and marketing info. :-) -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Darren R. Sorry but I do think the present packaging is ok.
In Singapore, owing to not much competition on distributing SuSE Linux here,
the price is rather high, the cheapest I can find is about US$50 and
sometime it sold for as high as US$90.
I would think that the so-called plastic cover with 2 holes or cd case is
just optional. It is very cheap here to get the plastic cover with 2 holes
for around US$2 for 10 pcs and a small zipper cd case (quite fat somehow)
only cost about US$3~4. I do not know how much it is going to cost in US or
other parts of the world but I do stock some for easy carrying.
If better packaging is used, the base cost is surely up, and the retail
price here will multiply with that factor. This is not good in long term as
priracy in Singapore and especially Malaysia is one of the biggest headache
here. I could save half the amount if I buy the prirated copy of SuSE,
whether it works or not I wouldn't know until I try it out, but I insist to
get the original copy to support the hard work of SuSE when my hands are not
so tight, I am still playing with 6.2 as I can afford to get 6.3 for the
moment, it is selling averagely around US$70 now, too expensive for me.
I think it make more sense to just buy you own preferred storage to house 6
or more cds and allows SuSE to maintain a lower production cost and spend
more time on how to further enhance the product instead of use what material
to package the cd.
Just my personal opinion. Regards.
Dennis/SG.

I'm not saying that they should necessarily use plastic instead of cardboard. There are probably other packaging methods available that are at most a few cents more expensive, and maybe not more expensive at all, that work better. Good design doesn't always have to cost more. I use the cases from "The Linux Developers Resource" once they get a bit old.. The good thing is that the dev kit is released slightly more frequently than a SuSE distro is :) So i should always have cases.. The packaging of 6.3 seems to be a bit tighter than your description; what I'd lied to see would be access to the spindle hole so ypu could take them out more easily. The trouble is that the CDROMs slip out of the slots very easily and tend to fall out if you slant the folder even a little bit backwards or sometimes sideways. I'm not necessarily objecting to any use of cardboard for the package; even this one might have worked if there were retainer flaps for each CDROM.
I got this exact same reaction to when i purchased SuSE 6.2.. I really did prefer the packaging of 6.1 and prior. I have noticed that my CD's slip out and go upside down and also the little pouches that the cd's sit in have a habbit of tearing if your take the CD out to quickly.
