[SuSE Linux] Intellimouse and Netscape
I posted a while ago about Netscape sending my ISP password out when I rolled the wheel on the MS Intellmouse. I did restart Netscape and the same thing happened. The system sat idle, offline for two hours. KDE was still active when I redialed and activated Netscape. It loaded from disk this time whereas the previous restart was from memory. I cannot get this to repeat again. Has anyone else experienced anything similar? The passing of the password does cause some concern. I have just noticed a strange occurance that tries to locate a server with the name of my ISP password.
SuSE 5.3 and Netscape 4.5 as user. It just happening that I spun the wheel on the mouse out of habit on Netscape and it began a search for an url. The error message came back that it could not locate server (password) try again.
I ended Netscape and restarted and experienced the same thing. On one occasion an url came up that was a Netscape site with the password in lowercase appended to the end.
It would seem that this is a security violation. I am curious if this is occuring on anyone elses installation.
Ah, nothing to worry about... just a malfuctioning trojan. :-( Seriously, this should be a big concern, because alot of us jumped off the MS ship because of bad security, and we may be under illusions about the security of linux. I don't know what to say except I had a similar experience which has really got me wondering. I was going thru the headers in <A HREF="news:alt.2600"><A HREF="news:alt.2600</A">news:alt.2600</A</A>> a while ago, and my root password was CAPITALIZED in one of the headers. It was as if someone did it to taunt me. I shook it off to coincidence, after all, alot of our brains work alike, and choosing certain words, could be coincidental.... but this also had an underscore in it. Then I was going thru the Suse website, and they recommended NOT using Netscape for mail, as a security risk. Then another user said there was a fix for it. Who do you believe? So, I've heard that it should be standard procedure to change your password at least once a month. Keep mixing it up. By the time one of your passwords get cracked, you've changed it anyways. This is all making for a great chapter in my new "spy novel". I working on a portable "tempest screen" made of half-inch EMT conduit, and aluminized space blankets. My big corncern is someone told me it is against the federal law to build a "tempest screen". :-( That really makes me wonder................... - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>
