Re: [SLE] Watching DVD on SuSE 10

How is it possible in this year 2005 for an installed piece of software in SuSE to be crippleware so that it is not able to play DVDs?
When the economic climate is such that you can't post open source software without the fear of retribution even though the user of the DVD is entitled to use of same disc. I use mplayer along with the existing code to view my DVDs and don't bother with the rest. It is my hope that someone does write a script so you can do your library download with a mininium of fuss. It just won't happen. Welcome to the world of Linux and open software. Adam
Zenwalk Linux: http://www.zenwalk.org/ plays DVD's without any extra messing or downloading of files. It's also based on Slackware Linux as SuSE was many years ago. However, this does not really address the very frustrating situation that both Basil and myself have found ourselves in. I'll add here that I feel the inability to play back a legally purchased DVD in SuSE Linux is a setback to a potential newcomer to Linux. But, fear not Basil, there is a way of watching your DVD's :-) Go to this URL: http://www.plainfaqs.org/linux/dvdplay/ and follow the very easy instructions. This is meant for 9.3 but I'm sure it should work with 10 or other revisions but may need slight tweaking. Hope this is of some help :-) -- ============================================== I am only human, please forgive me if I make a mistake it is not deliberate. ============================================== Take care. Blame the lawmakers, they say you can only play DVD's on what's allowed , i.e MS Windows, dictated by the film makers. This was played out in a court of law and it's illegal to play DVD's on Linux in the USA and Deutschland, both jurisdictions to which SuSE is answerable. Download libdvdcss, build a RPM, install it and as Linus says, be happy. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce ... You'll get no argumants from me on that one, Sid :-) I agree. It's just a ridiculous situation. -- ============================================== I am only human, please forgive me if I make a mistake it is not deliberate. ============================================== Take care. Hello, I see you released my old script (updated to new libdvdcss2 and suse releases). I wrote it when there was no problem to do it in Spain. Now the things has changed a bit and I had to supress the script from my pages. This is just to note that I do not released the script today :) Guillermo -- Guillermo Ballester Valor gbv@oxixares.com Ogijares, Granada SPAIN Public GPG KEY http://www.oxixares.com/~gbv/pubgpg.html #################################################### See World Weather Navigator at http://www.ogimet.com ####################################################

There are only five files to start with and three of them are in /usr/lib. less libdvdcss2-1.2.8-1.i386.rpm will shoe all of the files contained in the rpm. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998

OOPS. Meant two are in /usr/lib and three are in /usr/share/doc/libdvdcss2-1.2.9. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998
