[opensuse] Unmount fails during shutdown process
Hello, I would like to point out that I get the following error messages on my openSUSE 11.1 installation. File descriptor 3 left open Can't deactivate volume group "system" with 2 open logical volume(s) Yesterday I was surprised by the response from Cyril Hrubis. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=462519#c7 Now I try to get more attention on this issue. Why does the unmount not work as expected during the shutdown with my LVM2 configuration? First, check if you have the last sysvinit installed, which fixes a filedescriptor leak issue. (sysvinit-2.86-186.17.1) Ciao, Marcus -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The tool "zypper" displays this. Repository: @System Name: sysvinit Version: 2.86-186.17.1 Arch: x86_64 Vendor: openSUSE Installed: Yes Status: up-to-date Installed Size: 1.3 M Summary: SysV-Style init Can my open issue be reproduced in a virtual machine configuration? Will more system testers and software developers share experiences on the involved details? http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=466141 Regards, Markus -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Markus, I can confirm this behavior on 11.0 as well. It seems to be a new bug introduced with the samba 3.2.8 packages or similar update for cifs. When I try and shutdown with mounted drives, I get: Mar 19 18:10:50 alchemy kernel: CIFS VFS: server not responding Mar 19 18:10:50 alchemy kernel: CIFS VFS: server not responding Mar 19 18:10:50 alchemy kernel: CIFS VFS: No response to cmd 4 mid 1161 Mar 19 18:10:50 alchemy kernel: CIFS VFS: Send error in Close = -11 Mar 19 18:10:50 alchemy kernel: CIFS VFS: No response for cmd 50 mid 152 Mar 19 18:12:20 alchemy kernel: CIFS VFS: server not responding Mar 19 18:12:20 alchemy kernel: CIFS VFS: No response for cmd 50 mid 7641 Mar 31 02:06:30 alchemy kernel: CIFS VFS: server not responding Mar 31 02:06:30 alchemy kernel: CIFS VFS: No response for cmd 50 mid 36 Mar 31 02:07:30 alchemy kernel: CIFS VFS: server not responding Mar 31 02:07:30 alchemy kernel: CIFS VFS: No response for cmd 50 mid 25 Mar 31 02:08:30 alchemy kernel: CIFS VFS: server not responding Mar 31 02:08:30 alchemy kernel: CIFS VFS: No response for cmd 50 mid 1663 It is a PITA to have to hard shutdown everytime. -- David C. I find it interesting that there are more unmount surprises. http://www.jejik.com/articles/2007/07/automatically_mounting_and_unmounting_... http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=293513 I am more interested at the moment if ISO files and all LVM2 partitions can be cleanly unmounted. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=462519#c6 Regards, Markus -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

That's not for your case, but for others with similar umount problem: If you use autofs, it's shut down too early in 11.1, as K00. If one has mounted NFS or CIFS shares and some service still uses them, there will be problems later in the umount step. After moving K*autofs to a later stage (I made a Should-Stop entry in nfs for it), my umount problems at shutdown were drastically reduced.
