Hello List Members, Hope someone on this list can help me get an external modem working under SuSE 7.2. The modem being used is: US Robotics 56k Faxmodem Model 5686 External Modem Yast2 appears to set it up correctly. "wvdialconfig /etc/wvdial.conf" also appears correct, no errors Results of running wvdial ================================================= bash-2.05# wvdial --> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.41 --> Initializing modem. --> Sending: ATZ ATZ OK --> Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0 ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0 OK --> Modem initialized. --> Sending: ATDT9728810366 --> Waiting for carrier. The phone works correctly. In my previous computer I has an internal ISA modem working without problems. The new computer does not have ISA slots and I thought an external modem should work without problems. Thanks Terry
Hi, Are you behind a PABX or in an area that has bad lines. If the answer is YES to either of these... ...change your initialisation string to ATx0 I think... ...which tells the modem not to wait for a dialtone. Works behind a PABX!!! Hope this helps Q On Mon 15 Oct 01 15:02, tleck@mindspring.com wrote:

No no no !!! This is a common problem with many US modems in Australia - our dial tone is the equiv. of their busy tone.... Stick an X3 in the dial string; i.e. ATX3DT <numbers> Also, if you're going through a PABX, and have to dial 0 for external access, use ATX3DT0,<numbers> - the 0, dials for the outside line then waits 1 second, shich some of them need. jon

Are you sure you are plugging the phone line into the "line socket" , not the "phone socket" on the modem? That's what it sounds like.
My 56K Professional Message Modem "sees" the dial tone, but is still unable
to initiate authentication; by contrast my Diamond 56e Pro has no trouble at
all.
US Robotics suggested I remove the initialization scripts provided, but it
still doesn't work (which it did in 7.0, 7.1, and still does in Windows 98
s.e).
