turning off acpi without wrecking my machine? a newbie question
I could not get my eth0 port configured via DHCP without slowing down my whole system to a crawl. Here is the story: I have a Windows 2000 PC, a SuSE PC (8.2 Personal), and a little Netgear RP114 router/switch, which also acts as DHCP server. I want to use the Linux box as a VNC server, so that I can access the Linux desktop from the Windows box. The only thing that has worked so far is entering acpi=off (or a variant) as a boot command at startup. Then the eth0 port configures just fine. However, the Linux machine also becomes so slow when I do this that it is nearly unusuable. (The KDE desktop pulldowns, etc., are fine, but if I try to use them to open, say, a command window, it takes forever, if it happens at all.) I have, incidentally, tried swapping out the NIC, tried configuring the ports manually, tried a crossover cable, tried disabling IPv6, setting default gateways, etc. The acpi=off boot command is the only thing which has allowed the Linux box to "see" the switch. Any suggestions? ----------------------------------------- Hot Mobiil - helinad, logod ja piltsõnumid! http://portal.hot.ee
