[opensuse] Do we need a dedicated update notification icon in the systray?

Hey everybody! Forget about apper or PackageKit or whatever, just the simple question, completely detached from the code that makes it work – or not: Do you want a dedicated icon in the system try (panel) of your desktop that shows you whether updates are available? If yes, what signals do you expect from it? E.g. colour, flashing etc. Sven -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

For me I only need a notification updates are available. I can use Yast 2 Software Management to apply the updates myself. Steven -- ____________ Apply appropriate technology. Hi, no, I don't need it, I don't want it, it only disturbs me. And what is really not "nice" is that you can not even close the pk-update-icon unless you completely uninstall it. Karl Am 15.02.2013 01:23, schrieb Steven Hess:

I don't mind having it, but: - I want to be able to switch it off if I don't want to see it - It MUST NOT block YaST Software Manager the way things are now What do I expect if there is an update icon: - If it's switched on, I would only want it to show up in the systray similar to the way other notifications show up in KDE 4.10 (the icon simply becomes visible). Any blinking, flashing color changes or popups will only serve to annoy most of the user base. - If it's switched off, I expect it to stay switched off until I explicitly switch it back on again. - Color should match the desktop theme - If I click the updater, I would expect it to give a list of updates, and when I click Update, it would maybe launch YaST Software Manager? Having a separate interface for updating confuses the new users I work with. The biggest issue though... the fact that the current situation ends up with the updater blocking YaST. Fix that and we could even use the current layout/tools. That blocking thing is the single most annoying "feature" of the current situation, and why pretty much everyone I work with on openSUSE immediately goes on a search and destroy mission for the updater after installing. What do I expect if there is an update icon:
- If it's switched on, I would only want it to show up in the systray similar to the way other notifications show up in KDE 4.10 (the icon simply becomes visible). Any blinking, flashing color changes or popups will only serve to annoy most of the user base.

- If it's switched off, I expect it to stay switched off until I explicitly switch it back on again.

- Color should match the desktop theme
I don't mind this part ;-) Since I use "zypper lu" at least twice a day, it won't be visible for long anyway ;-)
- If I click the updater, I would expect it to give a list of updates, and when I click Update, it would maybe launch YaST Software Manager? Having a separate interface for updating confuses the new users I work with.

+1 *sigh* C., you have exactly the same ponts that I'd give. The icon is not a bad thing, but the current realization (blocking zypper/YaST, using different interface) is annoying if you ever try to update (or keep your system up-to-date) by yourself instead by artcifical intelligence ;-) Just my 2¢ Werner -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Yes.

For me color change will suffice, but for general usability it should change a shape too.

A few words more: * it should be able to start update application that is set as default by clicking icon itself; * it must exit immediately when requested; * after exit no daemons are left running; cron is the only one needed. * Must have in a context menu (right click) ** check updates now ** exit button (menu item) ** configuration button Configuration should provide: * time when it wakes up to check for updates; * set default application; I don't want any additional features that is already available in software management. -- Regards, Rajko. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I second this. If there would be an update notification it should be realized like Raijko said. Freely configurable concerning the time intervals it is checking for updates. No hassle, no new application. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Which system tray? ;-) I have WINDOWMANAGER=openbox, and for checking on updates, I just ask "zypper lu" in an xterm. One moment - that reminds me that I could teach gkrellm to check for updates regularly ... ;-) Have a nice day, Berny -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Only for those users that root authorizes to see them. And of course, only explicitly authorized users should be able to apply those updates. The current situation where any user without autorization from root can install updates is madness.

I don't care. A pop up that disapears after some time or clicking on it, then a coloured icon on the tray. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R. Hi,
If yes, what signals do you expect from it? E.g. colour, flashing etc.
I don't care.

Please no pop up's, or at least a possibility to turn them off Karl -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

A popup of the kind that displays a message near the panel, does not get focus automatically, and leaves the screen silently after 10 seconds or so, is used already by the desktops for important messages. I'm not talking of the popups that you have to make manually disappear, those are obnoxious. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R. Please, also not this kind, unless I can switch them off. It happens to me all the time, that I want to click somwhere on the screen in the moment one of these messages appears and instead of the wanted result I get some programms launched that I don't want because by chance I hit one of the buttons... Actually, we should be able to have: 1) Automatic updates. We have it via YaST Automatic Update. Problems are: * All feedback is via root mail from command line. Mails can be redirected to non-root system user, but then user has to know how to configure them to be visible in a mail client in order to skip visits to console and 'mail' which is not the most comfortable way to see emails. * It is only automatic updates. 2) Download only. Does not exist. This options is for users that don't want to be interrupted in the middle of the work with need to reboot, or have corrupt documents. 3) Notify only. Does not exist. Those that don't want to select updates. 4) Nothing at all. Currently when you disable PK. -- Regards, Rajko. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
