Hi everyone Sorry to come in late on this but I think it selfish that a user be able to install just his set of software. It would be very difficult for him to install all the packages and put the libraries in his path. If root does it, everyone can share the libs and application.
Your utter ignorance of the security issues in a multi-user environment are appalling.
What if I DON'T WANT that other user's application(s)?
Perhaps he has installed a program with the same name as one of the programs I use. Under your system, I have no real control over what executables *I* run, because any other yahoo on the system can install his own version of a program with the same name as a common app, but which does something completely differently (or merely incompatibly) and thereby create chaos for everyone.
What you're doing is arguing against the very mechanism which PREVENTS Unix and Linux from being the malware cesspool that Windows is.
It also would make the server have to store all his applications just for his use. Google Earth is a good bad example. Anyone can install it so you are faced with a server having 200 copies of google earth. Love L x
I may not have been to university and may have learned everthing I know for the past 7 years almost entirely by asking questions on this list but that doesn't make me ignorant. I run a 20 user computer network using nfs, nis, apache and dansguardian. We've never had a day off work unless un apagón. I know of no one who runs his own computer using Linux. Hi Lynn, Just a smalllll "complaint"....I did not write anything of the sort :-) . I don't know who wrote that (nor do I care). You are using Kmail. I don't know it (have never used it) but is it possible for you to make it insert the name of sender of the message you are responding to? Or at the least completely drop the ..."you wrote:" and substitute in its place something like "...it was written by whoever" - or some-such? :-) Or do what Clayton does: he simply just goes into a response without showing any date or poster of the message he's answering :-) BC -- If you don't succeed you run the risk of failure. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
