KDE desktop icons won't stay put
I'm posting here because I haven't had an answer on kde-linux or suse-kde. When I log in as a normal user, the desktop icons are always moved around. I put them back, but when I log out and back in, they always return to the same places, sort of scattered about the desktop. How can I fix this? SuSE 8.0, KDE3. -- =========================================================== Glenn Holmer (gholmer@ameritech.net) ----------------------------------------------------------- Performing music well is a matter of distorting the score to produce the desired illusion, namely the existence of the score in a pure state. ----------------------------------------------------------- -Shadow, 1975 ===========================================================

That's not the way it happens for me. I can't uncheck the option in Control Center>Look & Feel>Desktop to "Align Icons Vertically On Desktop." Every time I do so it reverts back. Then every time I make any change on the desktop like changing wallpapers, all the icons align on the left side of the screen. On the other hand, logging out and back in is no problem, like it is for you. -- Bryce Hardy (Santa Rosa, CA) brycehdy@sonic.net --->>>"Arbeit Macht Nicht So Frei!"<<<---

Yes, and I'm sorry to have offended you. The meaning of it to me is that of a rejection of the original phrase, which was used to mean "Work will make you free." (I'm a loading-dock worker in a department store, in case that helps...). If it doesn't come off as the kind of ironic humor it was meant to be, I apologize, and will not use it any more, especially on lists with a lot of Europeans. Thanks for pointing it out. -- Bryce Hardy (Santa Rosa, CA) brycehdy@sonic.net --->>>"Non-Offensive Sig In Formation"<<<---

Actually something like that is happening as well... somebody suggested that I should uncheck that, and I can't, just like you describe. But my icons are not aligned on the left! I am desperate for a solution, and am seriously considering switching to Gnome over this issue. For me it's a total show-stopper, after using KDE for four years. -- =========================================================== Glenn Holmer (gholmer@ameritech.net) ----------------------------------------------------------- Performing music well is a matter of distorting the score to produce the desired illusion, namely the existence of the score in a pure state. ----------------------------------------------------------- -Shadow, 1975 ===========================================================

Hold the shift button down when you move them. Doesn't seem possible to move just one icon that way, adjacent icons get selected as well. -- =========================================================== Glenn Holmer (gholmer@ameritech.net) ----------------------------------------------------------- Performing music well is a matter of distorting the score to produce the desired illusion, namely the existence of the score in a pure state. ----------------------------------------------------------- -Shadow, 1975 ===========================================================

Click on and hold the icon before pressing the shift button, if you click & release the icon, the program will open, or as you have found, if you press the shift first, it will select multiple icons. It has worked for me in both KDE2 & KDE3.
