[opensuse] openSUSE 13.1 installation boot menu
Hi, I haven't used the DVD installer for ages. Right now I've started the DVD 13.1 installation image (from USB Stick). I want to edit the boot/installation paramters according to http://doc.opensuse.org/projects/autoyast/appendix.linuxrc.html Is this still supported at all? The boot menu looks very poor now. I see only 3 boot entries "Installation" "Rescue" "Check Media" Where are the advanced options, for example keyboard layout. I tried to edit the boot commandline vie (e)ditor: hostip=192.168.1.28 netmask=255.255.255.0 gateway=192.168.1.1 nameserver=192.168.1.1 But it does not seem to work like it did in past. cu, Rudi -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Do you have UEFI system?

If you have UEFI you have grub2; press 'e' on menu entry and you are in editor; move to line starting with "linux" (or may be "linuxefi") and append parameters there.

I had tried this but adding linuxrc options had no effect when booting the full DVD. It did worked when using the net-install CD. Maybe a bug? However the UEFI boot of the installed system did not worked. It couldn't find any bootable system. So I've disabled UEFI boot in BIOS and then I even saw the full featured grub 1 DVD install menu again. Don't know what the poor DVD UEFI boot menu is good for. It makes not much sense to give me an editor if I can't change the keyboard layout. Or is this possible in BIOS nowadays? cu, Rudi -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

did you mount /boot/efi? So I've disabled UEFI boot in BIOS

here what I get with the dvd (32 or 64 bits gives the same) http://dodin.info/owncloud/public.php?service=files&t=24a460b515960a3382314e1086c57919 jdd -- http://www.dodin.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Yep, Yast created it.

I get this full menu only if I disable UEFI boot. Anyway I've managed to install a fresh 13.1 system now with grub-1. But it still can't boot because it does not find my lvm root partition. I've tried to re-create initrd from rescue system mkinitrd -f lvm2 It still does not work. It's a real pain. cu, Rudi -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

new computer/disk? AFAIK yast do not create any partition, may be there is one already, due to a preceding windows? first time I did this, I created a partition, missing the fact that there where already one an then I couldn't anymore boot without the F2 menu

true - I just tested. AFAIK, uefi boot is grub, not isolinux. Most the time, anyway, I forget to change language :-) I simply wait to have yast loaded and choose the language, then install in french
Anyway I've managed to install a fresh 13.1 system now with grub-1. But it still can't boot because it does not find my lvm root partition.
never used lvm, no necessity to add a complexity layer at this level I just installed an ultrabook asus with uefi with no problem only thing is that there are nearly as many systems as bioses. On this one the boot menu is after pressing Esc main thing, one and only one /boot/efi partition jdd -- http://www.dodin.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Forgive me for being as thick as a brick, but why do you want more options in the 13.1 installation USB menu other than those you mentioned in your OP? I mean, you are either Installing 13.1 or you are not. Do you mean that you want to see the ability to change the screen size, or add "nomodeset" and whatever then pressing "e" at the menu would allow you to add these parameters, yes/no? (Probably NO as I am completely "up with the birds" by asking what I just did :-) . But humour me :-) .) BC -- A civilisation is judged by how it treats the most vulnerable. I want to setup my network and keyboard right at the beginning without later clicking around within stupid menus. And I want to use installation sources from our local NFS mirror (oss, non-oss and update repos)

Yes it works but first there is no help message anymore which tells us about "e". And second if you want to edit something then it should be possible to change keyboard layout first. The old menu was very easy to understand for eyperts and non-experts. It also included a lot documentation texts to let us know about possible kernel args or linuxrc options. cu, Rudi -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

never was available in GRUB AFAIK (and I miss it)

new menu is that... new :-) we can hope of enhancements, it's now grub, no more linuxrc jdd -- http://www.dodin.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

linuxrc is still in use, The boat loader changed. linuxrc is not a bootloader. cu, Rudi -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

hello, I come back to your thread, you will soon understand why. * efi boot on dvd do not rely on linuxrc, but on grub. I have no idea of how to change the grub options there permanently. On the boot place, typing e gives you the *grub2* editor; * If I understand well, you can't (or couldn't) boot from efi bios entries. This interests me because I just hit a similar bug (uefi install do not boot). I will open a nes thread on the subject if google do not give ma rapidly an anwser :-) jdd -- http://www.dodin.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
