Has anyone played with IBM's viavoice speech recognition software on SuSE 7.2 yet? I am trying to get the rpms from mandrake 8.0 to go, but its java stuff tells me "sound system in use by another app" when that is definitely not the case.
You're sure KDE's sound server hasn't got the sound system? Do an "artsshell terminate" to be positive.
Absolutely positive! Desktop sound daemons is the first thing I would check. KDE isn't even running (currently using remote X display), artsd is not running, and lsof +D /dev (as root) shows nothing in the sound department. If any process after the lsof command can still have the sound device open and not be shown I'd like to know how to find out. Thanks, Volker

Now I'm in the same shape. I went out and got Mandrake 8, installed the IBM JRE and the the Mandrake version of VV, and now I've got that dreaded sound problem. Oh the agony. Has this been resolved? If so, how. HELP??? David
