The HDs are in raid(1) for backup not to improve read access.

I think that most IDE controllers write to one drive or the other (not both at the same time) so for reasonable performance, I was always advised to place the devices I wanted to perform best, especially when copying to each other, on different controllers. That said, I think you need to have the DVD as a slave device. So your sample config with the mirrored drives split across two controllers (IDE0 and IDE1) should work a little better than, say, putting both of them on the IDE1 controller as master and slave.
