I have no idea about the device you saw, but sure it makes sense. If you're using block devices (portable hard drives for example) you should be able to use nbd to share it over the LAN. It's pretty cool :) See the nbd package for the nbd-server program you need to run on the machine with the device, and the nbd-client program you need to run on the other machine. There should be a similar program in red hat, but I have no clue whatever about windows
