[opensuse] Seems openSuSE has some catching up to do
Listmates, This was a bit surprising. In this rating openSuSE is the leader in the number of obsolete packages and lag time in packaging. Granted the data underlying the study is not bulletproof, but it does seem to suggest a bit of corporate paralysis. I have no idea of the differences between the ways other distros handle upstream/downstream package movement, but some of the distros shown to do a better job have only a tiny fraction of the resources that openSuSE has. All good info to look at for comparison purposes. Take a look: http://oswatershed.org/ -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. One thing to keep in mind is that openSUSE 11.1 was released last year. It will be behind all the other distros that follow a 6 month release cycle. It would be interesting to see when they looked at openSUSE Factory. I expect openSUSE Factory to be behind at times as most of the work is done in the devel projects and when ready they are merged into openSUSE Factory. Ditto, that was my first thought. These counts depend heavily on where you draw the line in the various releases life-cycle. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Also, one must consider, which packages are most popular and/or most used. If the packages they are looking at are not used much, than what's the difference. This is why I strongly dislike (maybe even hate) these kinds of surveys. And, furthermore, I dislike packages like Ubuntu because it's a pain to customize-as-you-are-installing - it reminds me of Microsucks - it installs a "canned" set that you may or may not want. On the other hand, it's easy to install from-the-get-go -- but -- you really don't know what you have and/or what you need before you get started. I don't give a f*ckin' shit in these kind of "benchmarks", as long as the release is stable and useable. "Better one thing good as many things bad". Just my 5ø. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

In other words, to which advice you'll trust your money, young man a in fancy outfit and sweet talk, or the older one that proved to be good in the money matters. Comparing outfits doesn't help to find right answer on above question. -- Regards, Rajko http://news.opensuse.org/category/people-of-opensuse/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I already contacted the author of this webpage and clarified the situation. It seems that he assumed that our Factory was just an experimental branch and not the future release. This will be corrected, so that we have a correct comparison. However I agree with the others that these kind of websites is not that important as delivering a stable release.
