[opensuse] Free Office Suite
Hi, everyone on this list is always looking for a office suite that works in Linux and that works well for office tasks. I haven't fully tested out the latest version of Softmaker Office Suite, but it seems to work well for everything I have used it on so far. The latest free version is available now for download from this url: http://www.freeoffice.com/en/ Mark -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

C. I bought the commercial version of SoftMaker Office some time ago. They haven't spammed me, and they have been very good about sending me a new copy when I told them I had had to reinstall Linux due to some unrelated problem. It takes a few days for

I just don't see the point when LibreOffice supplies everything without having to harvest my email address or charge me a fee for spellcheck and the ability to save in DOCX (never mind whether I should save in that format or not... not the point of this conversation). I'm not against paying for software, but... I just honestly don't see the benefit over LibreOffice.. I use LibreOffice every day. My partner uses it for her professional work... there have been zero issues working with her employer who uses MS Office 2010. We can exchange docs and basic spreadsheets with no issues. I can spam bucket their emails.. but honestly why should I have to. C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

For those who are not satisfied with recent silly libreoffice changes (as myself) it is worth to give a try. Istvan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Yes, that would interesting to see. They must have some key advantages over Open/Libre office. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (1.1°C) http://www.dns24.ch/ - free DNS hosting, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I wonder if they're selling LibreOffice or OpenOffice? There have been many attempts to sell OO as a commercial product, including "free" support, when all they do is send you to a mail list. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

They've been around for almost as long as OOo. The original TextMaker and other components started around 1987 or 1988. As far as i know (based on my involvement with OOo), they developed in parallel, and are not a rebranding in any way of OOo (like some others that have tried to resell OOo under a new name). Hi Jos, I don't know if Softmaker is better than LibreOffice, so I can't answer your question. I suspect that you will have to try it for yourself if you wish to know, as you will have different usage requirements than I would. Personally, I don't have a dog in this fight. I don't care which program is better, I just want whatever I am using to work well. I didn't write my post to start a war over which is better or not, I was just trying to provide some information to the group. Linux is all about choices. So I offer this information to you in the spirit in which it was intended, that of trying to inform you about the availability of a new free office suite. I suppose it would be fair to say that almost any of the available programs can be inveigled into doing what most authors or editors need to have done. What remains is, how much trouble is it to make that happen, and, while we're at it, how user-friendly and how pleasant to look at and use the program is. I have already indicated that for me, the paid version of the SoftMaker suite is the one I have (for now) decided on. However, OpenOffice has indicated that by mid-year, they will have incorporated a lot of Symphony into their product; that will certainly make it _appear_ user-friendly. Whether it will have the capabilities that certain users desire remains to be seen. I, for one, would cheerfully buy WordPerfect, if it were available for Linux and up-to-date. (I know that it is at least theoretically possible to get the 2002 version to work, but it didn't have the MS fonts in the Linux version, and it would not be able to cope with the modern MS file formats, or, for that matter, ODT.) --doug -- Blessed are the peacemakers...for they shall be shot at from both sides.
