Probibly , slow , I dont lknow if it will compile a kernal. I have a 486 w 8 meg and it run ok , I havent tired x on it. I use it as a small Samba server. Works nicely for what I need. You can find simm for your machine at some of the flea markets or Computer show. ! Megs usualy go for $1.00 each , 4megs for $7.00 each, So you may want to add more if you can find them. Or upgrade the nmotherbourd and cpu. an older socket 7 boards can be foud for 75.00 with vidio and even sound. Pent 166 can be found chaep as well. I saw a board with 166 chip for 85.00 At 08:04 PM 12/5/1998 +0100, you wrote:

Probibly , slow , I dont lknow if it will compile a kernal. You can compile any thing as long as it requires amount of mem + 1 gig of swap. Swap in linux is only slower then ram. There is no diffence to
the program. - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>

Hmmmmm, When I compiled my kernal , It kept giving errors that more or less said that the kernal ext.... was two big. It compiled fine using bzImage. and I had a swap partion of 80 meg. It was SLOOOOOO toke 8-10 hours to recomile. Ended up doining it several times, each overnight. Finaly got it running. At 06:16 PM 12/5/1998 -0400, you wrote:

Can someone tell me where to get RPM's that are packaged for SuSE. Someone on here told me that in general, RedHat RPM's wont install cleanly, and that on SuSE one usualy go smoothly. I just haven't been able to find lots of the little things I want in SuSE packaged RPM's (e.g., winamp, realaudio/viseo. . . ). To the best of my knowledge there is still no contrib sub-directory on the SuSE ftp site (ftp.suse.com), and so no way for folks to send rpm's they build. This one way Red Hat has apps in rpm's. SuSE folks build them for the distributions they have, but I don't of a repository for other apps. You can run linux fine in 2 megs but you need 8 for X and 8 for X is a killer. 16 megs I recomened for X it is ok and you can run most apps with a little swap. try to find 4 4 meg chips for you computer or at lest another 4 megs to try out X. charlesiii@theverge.com <A HREF="http://theverge.com"><A HREF="http://theverge.com</A">http://theverge.com</A</A>> On Sat, 5 Dec 1998, Bostjan [iso-8859-1] Müller wrote:

I suppose you'll have problems with the install. SuSE requires 8 MB now. There were earlier versions (think up to SuSE 4.2 or 4.3) that worked on 4 MB. But you had to define and activate a swap partition prior to installation. YaST is even kind enough to tell you to switch to another virtual terminal and add a swap partition. (So out came the "Running Linux" book.) I just installed SuSE 5.3 on a 386 with 5MB. Took almost five hours to install 86 packages.
