[opensuse] Fwd: mozilla flashplayer plugin broken
Hello Listmates, I sent this e-mail earlier but it went unnoticed. Has anyone else had problems with the adobe flashplayer plugin 9.0.124.0 for linux x86_64 ? Mine is not working. :( I totally agree.. multimedia in 11.0 / 64-bit is not FG. Cheers, Sampsa ---------- Forwarded Message ---------- Subject: mozilla flashplayer plugin broken Date: Friday 29 August 2008 From: Sampsa Riikonen <sampsa.riikonen@iki.fi> To: "opensuse+help" <opensuse+help@opensuse.org> Dear List, Have anyone else noticed the following problem with suse 11, 64-bit while watching flash videos from, say, youtube (happens with other webpages too..)? The flashplayer (mozilla/firefox plugin) just shows a blank screen (i.e. the rectangle where the video should appear is just white/pink, nothing happens). Then when I am trying to access the flashplayer options, i.e. clicking with right mouse button on the blank screen, nothing happens either.. This seems to happen quite randomly.. a video I could see yesterday, I cannot access today. My flashplayer version is 9. If you're using KDE 4.0, then there ARE problems! I just finished today replaceing 4.0 on the last client box that had it. Until KDE 4.* is a FULLY functional AND FULLY configurable replacement for KDE 3.5, I'll NOT use it. On the factory list, there's talk that openSUSE 11.1 won't include KDE 3.5. IF not, then I'm done with Novell AND openSUSE. This would be the most ignorant decision that can be made in regards to the future of openSUSE, IMHO!! I KNOW of developers who presently use openSUSE 11.0, who WILL also do the same thing....guaranteed!!! Some are very misguided when they think they can ram incomplete marginally functional software down our throats. NOT!! As far as I am concerned, none of the KDE-anything can compare to the latest Gnome. Ed -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Eh.. The flashplayer plugin for mozilla/firefox shouldn't have anything to do with the kde version, I suppose. And It's strange no one has commented of this problem before.. Flashplayer plugin 9.0.124.0-10.1-i586 for suse 11.0, 64-bit does not work!! (am I missing something here.. isn't that "i586" meaning it is 32-bit?). I don't care about flash animations (youtube is a waste of time), but my 60-years old mom's laptop with the latest suse 11.0 / kde4 is a mess. - The mixture of kde3 programs with the kde4 system (just an example: most programs pop-up kde3 kmail even you have configured everything for kde4) - the plugins (mplayer plugin, etc.) not able to handle .asx, etc. "strange" multimedia formats. Right now even flash does not work! - etc. Poor woman, have to reinstall her m$-windows. :( Cheers, Sampsa -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

KDE4 is not something I would unleash on a new user. I use it everyday (and prefer it over 3.5), but I am willing and able to work around the daily changes and problems. A new user should be using KDE3.5 or Gnome, NOT KDE4. The problems you are having with Flash could very well be related to KDE4... there are things (that are seemingly unrelated to KDE4) that break and break badly from one daily build of KDE4 to the next... and there are things that are fixed. It is a Window Manager that is still very much in a state of flux. It will not be "ready" for a while.

Yes i586 means 32 bit. Question... you are installing 64bit openSUSE? Why not run 32bit? There are "less" issues with running a full 32bit install of openSUSE on a 64bit machine, and the performance gain is minimal to zero for the average user... such as your mother and her laptop.

Simply things.. start over a clean install of KDE3.5 with a 32bit kernel. Then you will have no more problems related to running a mixed 32/64 bit environment (happens with 64 bit, especially when you start adding multimedia support)... and KDE 3.5 works and works well - especially for new users. 32-bit, KDE 3.5. That is a very good idea, thanks. I would hate to work in Novell's helpdesk after all this hassle with 64-bit and KDE 4. I wonder how they are able to sell this stuff to customers. ;) Just for the record: the flashplayer works well for the _first_ flash animation I am viewing in a firefox session. For the next animation I am trying to click, the flashplayer stops working. Weird. And in Adobe's pages there is available a version that says "x86_64"..? The OSS repository, it seems, uses the 32-bit version with nspluginwrapper. Cheers, Sampsa

It is worth saying that 64 bit does work, and works very well in most cases.. but, when it comes to multimedia support, things get a bit wobbly. Generally, the solution has been that the openSUSE installer installs 32 bit Firefox and the 32 bit codecs and plugins. This means there is a mishmash of 32 bit and 64 libs installed, among other things. This works, and there are many here on the list that have this working successfully. KDE4... a hot topic. Like I said, I use it... and don't have issues I cannot deal with, but I would not install it on a new user's computer. It requires constant/daily updates to stay on top of the changes. KDE3.5 will simply just work... even if it's never updated after the initial install. In my experience, particularly when you are setting up an openSUSE install for a new/inexperienced user, things work better with either a full 32 bit system or a full 64 bit system. Mixing architectures seems to have issues. Issues that can be sorted by an experienced user, but for a new user, it can be too much... thus a 32 bit install with KDE3.5 can be a better choice (even on 64 bit hardware). I've had to reload the page up to 5 times in order to get flash to work. I use Flash block, and it I click it, then it gives a blank area where the flash is supposed to be. If I click the area where the flash is supposed to be, it crashed Firefox. If I reload it several times, it will finally work. Been like that for a while now.

I have the same problem on this P3/1Ghz Thinkpad as I do on my CeleronDC overclocked system running 64bit. Only thing in common is that they both have ATI chips(Thinkpad has Rage Mobility M3/128 w/ 8MB and the Celeron has X300 PCIe 128MB). Using the opensource ATI drivers on both. I've just finished building an X2 3800+(Not currently overclocked) with an Nvidia FX5200, but haven't tried it yet, My friends Athlon XP 2200+ with Geforce2 MX 200 without flashblock and it plays flash ads just fine and youtube just fine. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

System here is 64 bit, and I have no complains in KDE3. I disabled flashblock as annoyance ;-) It is still installed, though. So many sites provide relevant information using flash that clicking on play button in every gray window makes life harder. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
