Mesa in the packman repos vs. mesa in tumbleweed
Problem with zypper dup that sometimes have hick-ups with two conflicting Mesa versions available. Why is there a MESA version in the packman repos if opensuse provides one too? To be clear I am talking about the Tumbleweed repos. I recall some graphic card reason, but it is a recall that comes remotely and long time ago. So since this recently caused me some trouble because of shifting repo here and there I wanted to understand. Someone can maybe educate me on this. I do not think that patent rights can be an issue here. I just have to decide which Mesa should I use and I do not have any base for discrimination between the two. Thank you in advance. P.S. this is a re-invoice of the very message. The first and second vanished, possibly due to a spam filter.
Hi, Unfortunately, it's all about patents... Only way to survive this right now is to pin Packman repos and stick to then ~at all costs. Cheers, Damian Feb 5, 2023 10:37:25 Stakanov <stakanov@disroot.org>:

Ok. My own filters did put this mail in the wrong postbox. Hmmm, filtering is difficult. I am quite shocked that there are even problems with mesa now. Quite crazy. Is there any article / discussion on what is actually the issue? I would be interested to understand.

Iy say here; https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:RPM_conditional_builds This variant use a way that combines definition and usage: 0 means default boolean value, ? means "to judge". So the whole statement means if BUILD_ORIG condition is met, then set the build status of the if quoted content to 1, which is to build them; if it's not met, then use default, which is 0, not to build. So, to enable codecs such as h264, h265, etc., # rpmbuild --rebuild -D 'BUILD_ORIG 1' Mesa-XXX.src.rpm Thus we set the value of BUILD_ORIG to value 1 to build. Just because it's Packman doesn't ignores patent issues. Care to make a summary of your findings in plain English so it will be clear to everyone who reads your summary will know the difference.
I don't want to get too deep into this because it's a sensitive issue. .... For example, for vlc, Packman's Tumbleweed repo has vlc-codecs-3.0.18-7.8.x86_64.rpm. But the openSUSE repo does not have anything corresponding to this, so it is not possible to play mp4 files. The email I just sent refers to this difference. Tumbleweed Mesa is built without hardware acceleration support for several codecs (the full list was in the message you replied to). Packman build enables support for these codecs.

-- Cheers, Carlos E. R. (from openSUSE 15.4 x86_64 at Telcontar) In fact the issue comes up when there is a mismatch between the speed certain dependencies are requested, hence first I was asked to "change vendor" so I did, only to find out that the very files then were offered a few days after...requesting "change vendor" again.
Hence the need for discrimination about what to do, since the packages are seemingly(!) the same, but if you dig into that discussion you see, yes the issue is there (as usually). It is a bit sad that even mesa is now hit by this.
