Mouse freezes randomly but often
Hello, since today I have a big problem with my mouse. It freezes randomly. As much as I can see, only the mouse freezes (I can use the keyboard, the gkrellm window shows activities, the radio keeps running). It starts with stagnant movement of the mouse, then it freezes completely for several seconds and then the cursor jumps to where I move it last. Then it works normal for a while, but soon starts again. I have the problem since today (yesterday I run the updates). I had the same problem like a month ago, but then it went away "magically" after I changed the mouse-receiver to another usb-plug, but this time it doesn't help... Of course I changed the battery of the mouse, I also changed to another mouse (of the same model), plugged the wireless receiver to several different usb-plugs at the computer... reboot only helps for a short while. They are logitech wireless mouses. inxi -SMGxx System: Host: venus Kernel: 5.3.18-150300.59.93-preempt x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: gcc v: 7.5.0 Desktop: KDE Plasma 5.18.6 tk: Qt 5.12.7 wm: kwin_x11 dm: SDDM Distro: openSUSE Leap 15.3 Machine: Type: Desktop System: Gigabyte product: Z590 AORUS PRO AX v: -CF serial: <superuser/root required> Mobo: Gigabyte model: Z590 AORUS PRO AX serial: <superuser/root required> BIOS: American Megatrends LLC. v: F9a date: 01/24/2022 Graphics: Device-1: NVIDIA GA104 [GeForce RTX 3070 Ti] vendor: Micro-Star MSI driver: nvidia v: 470.141.03 bus ID: 01:00.0 chip ID: 10de:2482 Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.3 compositor: kwin_x11 driver: nvidia unloaded: fbdev, modesetting, nouveau, vesa alternate: nv resolution: 1920x1200~60Hz s-dpi: 93 OpenGL: renderer: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti/PCIe/SSE2 v: 4.6.0 NVIDIA 470.141.03 direct render: Yes I looked at /var/log/messages, but I cant figure out what could hint to mouse problems (due to my lack of knowledge of what to look for). Both mouses work on a laptop running 15.2. On the other hand I am not 100% sure because the problem occurs randomly... Still, it would be strange if the same problem occurs in the same moment with two different mouse of different age...
Or boot your computer with a live system, to see if it is hardware or software.
It is complicated because the problem doesn't occur immediately. Right now - I left the computer without using for approx. two hours - the mouse works normal, while before I couldn't do anything that requires the mouse... I have the feeling (only the feeling) that it could be related to the use of the GIMP with several windows open. But I am not sure. I thought, maybe the system is swapping, but it wasn't, I checked. Another suspicion I have is that it could be related to an ssh disk I was using for the images I edited in Gimp. Again, only a guts feeling. Don't know how I could find out... -- Daniel Bauer photographer Basel Málaga https://www.patreon.com/danielbauer https://www.daniel-bauer.com

Not sure if there's any correlation but I recently bought a new wireless mouse which, unlike another wireless model I have, won't work properly plugged into a USB port on my small laptop dock (unless used in a particular location at very close range), but will work using the port built into the laptop. Then I connected a spare phone via bluetooth and the mouse went really laggy and became barely usable until I disconnected the phone. Bluetooth and wireless are both handled by the same small card integrated into the laptop so there appears to be some crossover interference. Could you have anything either wireless or bluetooth that is getting in the way? gumb

since my last mail I am working in Gimp and the mouse works... Indeed I had two mobile phones laying on the table right to the side of the mouse pad. I also moved the files from that ssd to another disk. So right now I don't know, if it is a coincidence, or if it has to do with the phones or with the ssd. I'll continue to work for approx. an hour. Tomorrow I'll test again after rebooting. If it's still ok, I'll first try for a while with the phones next to the mouse, and if this doesn't disturb it, I'll try again with files on the ssd. I hope I'll find out with that. I'll keep you updated, but it will take a day or two to hopefully exclude coincidences... Oh, wait. Not mice with long cables, but trackballs with long cables. For mice wireless is preferable. I only have a BT one without dongle, connected to a tablet; works fine. I do have one mouse with long cable for emergencies. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.3 x86_64 at Telcontar)

I have something similar happen on my tower system occasionally, it happens when the disk is thrashing like mad, I can't load anything, not even systemmonitor, during that time to find out why the disk is thrashing away.

I looked at /var/log/messages, but I cant figure out what could hint to mouse problems (due to my lack of knowledge of what to look for).
Any hints what I could search for, what I could do?

I don't believe Daniel is using wayland as it is not color controlled and Daniel is a photographer and would need color control, so X. -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet oftc

This is why you don't top-post.... That said, I suspect the issue is related to this or some similar issue. If you had wayland and went back to X, you will likely need to reinstall the parts of KDE that support X instead of wayland (or at least delete the sysconfig cache). The same would go for the noveau driver -- I don't use either, but would think that both noveau and kde would set config options based on whether X or wayland was being used. (ideally they should seamlessly adapt to whatever is present -- but I wouldn't bet on it) Someone who knows more about the dependencies there will have to chime in and provide a more definite answer. There was another ancient issue with wireless mice not playing nicely with USB3. (that's been more than a decade ago) Wireless mice instructions used to specify using USB2 and avoiding USB3 for whatever bus timing issues that presented to the older wireless mouse drivers. That has long since been fixed, but nothing prevents a regression from sneaking into either the driver or the kernel side. As a test, if you have USB2 available -- even on the back of the computer -- try plugging the mouse receiver in there. (probably won't make a difference -- but will eliminate one possible issue) -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

Can you try to plug the mouse on another computer?
Don't know how I could find out...
clean battery poles/contacts and/or try a new battery.
maybe move radio to a more accessable position. (it is internet radio running in a browser window)
since my last mail I am working in Gimp and the mouse works...
(I'll clean the poles in the mouse after those tests or if it starts to make problems again without the phones/with the "normal" disk... :-) )
One shouldn't be too happy too early... right after I sent the last post, the mouse went crazy again.
I cleaned the contacts. I tried with the last kernel, same problem. Because I've read somewhere that it could be a graphics problem, I re-installed all Nvidia in cosole-Yast (runlvel 3), rebooted...
The problem occurs since the very first moment of logging into KDE...
So, on Sunday I went to the next Chinese shop (they are always open) and bought a 5€-cable-mouse. It worked perfectly, apart of that it makes a lot of noise, clicks hard and the wheel feels as if it wouldn't really love to be turned... Today I received a new cabled Logitech silent mouse. It also works perfect and my problems have disappeared (knock on wood). I don't know if actually both my wireless mouses (mice, sorry) got defective at the same moment, or if the system has a problem with them. For the moment I am happy with the cabled mouse. I don't know yet if I stay with it, it's nice not to have to use batteries... -- Daniel Bauer photographer Basel Málaga https://www.patreon.com/danielbauer https://www.daniel-bauer.com

BT can suffer from interference. I have a loudspeaker for my tablet and a headphone for the same: depending on location, they suffer interruptions. A pair of tiny headphones I got as a present, same, even when I'm walking on a road on a forest. I got a cheap smartwatch (Mi-6) which communicates with my phone via BT. One day, it vibrated signalling a phone call. Huh? I had disabled that feature. And my phone was out of range on another room. I picked my phone, and there was no call. Today, with my phone out of range again, it said it needed an update (it can not get updates on its own, it needs connect to the phone). My guess, is it is spurious communication with my neighbour. (I think wireless mice and keyboards with dongles also use BT frequencies and perhaps technology). -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.3 x86_64 at Telcontar)

I'm pretty sure that most Logitech mice and keyboards don't use BlueTooth. I know for sure that mine don't, because BlueTooth isn't running on my computer. (I have a BlueTooth keyboard that I got a couple of years ago so that I could get rid of the one connected to my Mac, but it was always dropping its pairing, and guess what? To pair it again required a connected keyboard! So it's effectively useless. Also, at that time, the SuSE implementation of BlueTooth didn't seem to want to work with anything but speakers, so that made it definitely useless. Unless you have a wireless mouse or keyboard that explicitly says it uses BlueTooth, it probably doesn't. Leslie -- Platform: Linux Distribution: openSUSE Leap 15.4 x86_64

That doesn't matter, the dongle can run BT transparently. No drivers needed. Or, they can use the same frequency band and similar technology, thus prone to similar interference.
