[opensuse] mtp:/Galaxy S7/ dolphin / midnight commander ??
Hi, to access a galaxy s7 phone: on tumbleweed plugging in usb cable, could it open with dolphin, no problem. but where in the directory hierarchy i would find it? i would like to use midnight commander to copy files, NOT dolphin. is there a possibility? (like with old android phones or with apple with ifuse and fusermount????) to get access during the normal filesystem-directory's. - or maybe with something inside midnight commander like the ftp-connection #??? thanks, simoN -- www.becherer.de -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

/run/media/loginname I would expect, same as when plugging in a USB stick.

/run/media/loginname is in my MC hotlist, but that location does not exist until the mount has been made. -- Evolution as taught in public schools is religion, not science. Team OS/2 ** Reg. no, there it is not. i have a symlink to this directory. usb will appear there, but not the galaxy s7. this my have to do with the protocol "mtp" from newer android phones.

Well run the 'mount' command. Perhaps that will give you a clue as to where it is mounted. Alternatively, look at the location bar -- you do have that turned on? -- for dolphin. And if it is like the older android phones, (and my Android tablet and my cameras) you might be able to find a setting to select whether to use MTP or ... something else. YMMV. But then again, maybe its a matter of drivers ... Certainly googling for why MTP doesn't work for Windows/PC end up in telling you install a new driver (and restart). http://www.device-recovery.com/how-to-connect-android-devices-to-pc-with-usb... As for Dolphin vs MC ... well I favour the command line, and I end up using the 'mount' command to determine where the 'phone' (or tablet) is located. https://www.xda-developers.com/use-android-mtp-on-linux/ leads to https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2055563 Try zypper search mtp and see what that turns up. yes, you will need dolphin and kdeconnect will not work in text mode, and afaics does not appear inside the regular filesystem. -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet freenode -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

There are fuse based mtp filesystems like mtpfs or jtmpfs, but also GNOME gvfs should mount it somewhere. (Or even gphotofs) Ciao, Marcus -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

If you were using XFCE or Gnome, it appears under /run/user/{UID}/gvfs/ You could try to open it with Thunar, then it should appear there. But maybe it conflicts with Dolphin, dunno. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.0 x86_64 at Telcontar)

Is "data transfer mode" for the USB connection enabled on the phone? Otherwise the phone will not show up in dolphin.
He said it shows in dolphin. He wants to find it also in the file tree hierarchy.
Sorry! My fault.
Gnome/xfce do it, I don't know if KDE does.
Connecting my Android 8.1-phone via USB (openSUSE Leap 15 + openSUSE Tumbleweed both plasma5) will make the phone show up in dolphin and i can access it via dolphin but i can't find it anywhere in the file tree. mtpfs and simple-mtpfs will both fail to connect to the phone (openSUSE Leap 15 + openSUSE Tumbleweed both plasma5). Thanks a lot for all your suggestions, because it is not my phone, i first have to get it back to the place of my computer, then could test and will report here if i get success. simoN -- www.becherer.de -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I created /android (as root), installed simple-mtpfs (Leap 15) Now, the part which is annoying is the phone vendor's bits around USB attachment. I find one needs to go into 'developer settings', turn on 'usb debugging', and even then, there's some little (like, very small size notificaiton) that tells you "you are attached in some way, tap to change", and sometimes I need to tap that to say "transfer files over MTP" or similar. Also, the phone needs to be unlocked (I mean, with one's PIN, not rooted). In any case, the above script with simple-mtpfs has worked for me, modulo the phone USB dance, for the past 3 versions of opensuse, and past 3 android phones. Best of luck, YMMV, etc.. Going into developer settings should not be necessary. Instead, when you connect the device over USB you should get a notification that an USB cable is connected for charging, tap to change. So, tap and change to MTP. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.0 x86_64 at Telcontar)

no luck, i enabled usb debugging on the phone rpm -qa | grep mtpfs mtpfs-1.1-3.47.x86_64 simple-mtpfs-0.2-9.52.x86_64 created a directory and simple-mtpfs -o allow_other /mnt/phone LIBMTP PANIC: Trying to dump the error stack of a NULL device! googeling the error did not bring be to the point. from what repo is your simple-mtpfs-0.2-lp150.1.3.x86_64 (the ...lp150.. looks for me that it is not a standart repo???) simoN -- www.becherer.de -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
Hi, i found: https://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2016-10/msg00154.html and inside: The point is, that only one MTP tool can access the smart-phone at the same time. That's why I wasn't successful before. If simple-mtpfs prints an error like # simple-mtpfs ~/phone LIBMTP PANIC: Trying to dump the error stack of a NULL device! then probably another MTP tool accesses the smart-phone. You can kill them all: # killall -v gvfs-mtp-volume-monitor # killall -v gvfsd-mtp # killall -v mtp.so but now (again) i do not have any phone here, so i need some time to test if it will run then here. simoN -- www.becherer.de -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Yes, that is so.
If simple-mtpfs prints an error like
# simple-mtpfs ~/phone
LIBMTP PANIC: Trying to dump the error stack of a NULL device!
then probably another MTP tool accesses the smart-phone.
You can kill them all:
# killall -v gvfs-mtp-volume-monitor # killall -v gvfsd-mtp # killall -v mtp.so
/IF/ you have "gvfs*" running, then forget about simple-mtpfs, because there are easier ways. Just open the phone with Nautilus or Thunar, and the phone will appear under the "/run/user/1000/gvfs/" tree. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.0 x86_64 at Telcontar)
Hi carlos,
You can kill them all:
# killall -v gvfs-mtp-volume-monitor # killall -v gvfsd-mtp # killall -v mtp.so

Just open the phone with Nautilus or Thunar, and the phone will appear under the "/run/user/1000/gvfs/" tree.
i use kde so i do not think gvfs is running, but it is installed. so next time i have a phone here, i have to check what has access from kde to the mtp and will kill that process. simoN
