Backing system from NT server

Here's a good question! Let's see who the pros are... I'm the only guy at my company that's running Linux (long story so let's not get into it). My W2k server backs up all the machines everynight via a OnStream Tape drive and NTbackup program. Can I backup my linux box with the tape and NTbackup? If so, how? (detailed please...it's been a long night). If not, is there anyway to back up my system on a nightly basis? Thanks, Tom

Hi If you'll run samba server on your linux box, you'll be able to see all the files you choose to show, from the W2k server. To set up samba for that purpose is not a big deal. Make sure that samba is installed. That will install SWAT (Samba Web Administration Tool) to. Edit /etc/inetd.conf and uncomment the line containing swat setup. Edit /etc/services and make sure that you have a line containing: swat 901/tcp Restart inetd: "kill -1 PID" where PID is the process ID of inetd. Almost done... Now using your favorite webbrowser go to: http://localhost:901 The configuration should be selvexplaining... Just remember to set "[Global] encrypt passwords" to yes. Now your W2k server sees your linux box as a WinNT box and can (with right permissons and shares) access your linux files. Good luck ;-) Regards Jónas

I did something similar a while ago.. I used 'tar' to make a "local" copy on the linux box, and then via samba uploaded it to the NT, (special "backup directory") and then the "regular backup" just bothered with the NT server. -- /Rikard --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rikard Johnels email : rjhn@linux.nu mob : +46 70 464 99 39 --------------------------Public PGP fingerprint------------------------------ < 15 28 DF 78 67 98 B2 16 1F D3 FD C5 59 D4 B6 78 46 1C EE 56 >

Hi Tom, I don't think you can access the tape device on the NT box directly. Here's what I do. 1) create an NT account or use an existing one (maybe yours?) 2) create a special backup dir on the NT box for the Linux files to reside. That way you won't mix NT and Linux files (if you have any) 3) mount dir from step 2 with smbmount or equiv 4) rsync Next time NT box makes backup, your files will be included. I can send you the relevant scripts if you're interested. -Stathis. Tom Nielsen wrote:
