I tried beep, and it only works when I am not in tty 7 (X window), the console doesn't beep in X ether (when I try to delete things that aren't there). -- Jesse Shaver

In X, there is a setting called visual bell, it makes the screen blink instead of ringing the bell. Check your .Xdefaults file mine has a line ! xterm*VisualBell true -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation
