Previously I had bought a new HP (3790c I think). It wasn't supported under linux, and in windows it seemed to run fine. Then I saw the Epson Perfection 2400 on sale and bought that and returned the HP, since the epson _is_ supported under linux. It was like going to a whole other world! The HP was so loud that people could hear it scanning over my phone! The Epson model is quiet with amazing quality, and _much_ better software for windows and it offers software for linux. It was plug and play with SuSE 8.2 connected via usb. An awesome scanner. As for HP...NO COMPARISON!
OK, who's gonna send me my commission? :)

Have you trie scannning in cardboard mounted slides and if so what were your results? Our local Staples is currently selling this model for $150 after rebate which seems like a good deal if it can handle mounted 35mm slides with any problems.
You mentioned it offers software for Linux; what exactly are you referring to with respect to the Linus software, something bundled with the scanner, something off the Epson page, or just that Linux itself recognizes it.
Thanks for taking the time to reply,

Dave, Here's a link to the software that is supplied for the scanner. It's pretty nice, and can be integrated into the GIMP as well. If you go to epson.com and search for linux, there's a link to this site...so they pretty much endorse it. I have not tried scanning slides in (don't own any), but I've done color and black and white negatives. I can blow them up to print stunning 8x10's. It comes with a nice adapter for holding the negatives and slides. BTW I paid $150 after rebate as well. Worth every penny :) http://www.epkowa.co.jp/english/linux_e/lsd_e.html Good Luck, Mike Sacco
