[opensuse] Font sizes in X
Hi, folks I have two computers with identical monitors (Samsung SyncMaster 2232BW), which are configured identically in Yast/Sax2. This model is not there, so they are configured as LCD 1680x1050, 20". Fonts are configured with the same types and sizes in KDE's System Settings in both machines. However, in one of them the fonts are displayed slightly bigger than in the other. What may be causing this? The video cards are different, may this have something to do with the problem? Other than the card specific settings, I can see no other significant differences in xorg.conf in both machines. Yes. It would be interesting to see what video card models are used.

Maybe if you paste both xorg.config to http://pastebin.ca and post links here, someone can compare them. More eyes, see more :-) -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The machine with the bigger fonts has an onboard ATI Xpress 200 and the other in which the fonts are smaller has an nvidia GeForce 8400 GS. It seems the problem is DPI related, as suggested by Randall in other post. However, I don't know where to set this system wide. Both machines have the "Force fonts DPI" option in KDE4's System Settings set to "Disabled". If I force a higher DPI in the machine where the fonts are smaller, they get bigger, but only for KDE applications. Pure Qt applications stay the same and I think GTK applications too. Where does KDE get DPI settings from when "Force fonts DPI" is set to "Disabled"?

Here is the link for the xorg.conf of the machine with smaller fonts: http://pastebin.ca/1359221 And the link for the xorg.conf of the other machine: http://pastebin.ca/1359228 Thanks for your help, Marcelo -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Here is the link for the xorg.conf of the machine with smaller fonts: http://pastebin.ca/1359221

Thanks for your help,

There is difference in HorizSync and VertRefresh, which will indirectly influence X decision how many pixels can be sent to the screen. You may check actual resolution that is set for each screen using xdpyinfo as Don said. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Most likely the issues is a difference in the display resolution used to compute how many pixels corresponds to a point (roughly 1/72 of an inch)... or any other absolute size. There are, unfortunately, many places this can be set. A KDE default can be configured in the KDE Control Center, but other applications (Adobe Reader and Firefox come to mind) have their on DPI configurations.
Thanks,
Marcelo

It seems the problem is indeed the DPI configuration, in spite of the monitors being configured the same way in both machines. Both machines have the "Force fonts DPI" option in KDE4's System Settings set to "Disabled". Try "xdpyinfo | grep -B1 resolution" (without the quotes) in a konsole. That will tell you something about your current X configuration. office:> xdpyinfo | grep -B1 resolution dimensions: 1680x1050 pixels (445x278 millimeters) resolution: 96x96 dots per inch I have an nvidia card (GeForce 8500 GT) and in the "Device" section of xorg.conf I have Option "DPI" "96x96" I am using the binary nvidia driver. I don't know if this works with the open source driver or with the ATI drivers, but I would guess there must be similar options available. Have a look at these for more information. /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0/html/appendix-b.html /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0/html/appendix-e.html At least that is where they are on my machine. These don't seem to belong to any RPM package, so I am not really sure how they got there. Hope this helps. -- Don -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Is the afga-fonts rpm and/or the Microsoft fonts package installed on both or neither? If on only one, there will definitely be a difference. To see why, compare the lists in /etc/fonts/suse-post-user.conf to the output on http://fm.no-ip.com/auth/Font/fonts-face-samplesLW.html & http://fm.no-ip.com/auth/Font/fonts-comps-amtlibms.html -- "The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty." Many thanks for everyone who helped. The problem was indeed the DPI setting, as suggested by Randall. With the xdpyinfo command suggested by Don and Rajko, I was able to see the DPI settings in both machines and adding Option "DPI" to the device section of xorg.conf I can now set it to my liking in both machines. Problem solved :) Thanks, Marcelo Em Qui 12 Mar 2009, Marcelo Magno T. Sales escreveu:
