HI all, I've got a small problem. Computer A is running SuSE 10.1 with Apache2. I can see my public_html files without problem. Computer B is running XP, on this system I can not get to my public_html files. It gives me a "not allowed" error. I'm sure that the net is working because I have samba working fine. Any ideas? Does apache on computer A allow computer B to view the user-directories? /Per Jessen, Zürich

Yes, but only by Samba. Make sure that port 80 is open on your web machine and not blocked by the SuSE firewall. Then you need to update the apached config file, httpd.conf to enable the user directories. Search for 'UserDir' in httpd.conf. You also need to set the correct permissions in the public_html directories. -- Jerry Feldman <gaf@blu.org> Boston Linux and Unix user group http://www.blu.org PGP key id:C5061EA9 PGP Key fingerprint:053C 73EC 3AC1 5C44 3E14 9245 FB00 3ED5 C506 1EA9

I know, I just was using this to show that the connect is up and ok.

I have the firewall turned off.
Then you need to update the apached config file, httpd.conf to enable the user directories. Search for 'UserDir' in httpd.conf.
Could you give me an idea what I need to change there. I think that I should change something below, but what? ################# <Directory /> Options None AllowOverride None Order deny, allow Deny from all </Directory> # use .htaccess files for overriding, AccessFileName .htaccess # and never show them <Files ~ "^\.ht"> Order allow, deny Deny from all </Files> ######################
You also need to set the correct permissions in the public_html directories. --
All these directories are at least 755. Thanks! I've been playing with this problem today. I added Computer B to the hosts file on Computer A. I can now ping from A to B. BUT when I ping from B to A XP gives me this error: "Destination host unreachable" It looks to me that the problem is on the Linux machine. What do you guys think? Thanks! The ping is made of 2 parts: * Part 1: Send an ICMP from computer A to computer B. So computer A must know how to get to computer B. * Part 2: Reply of the ICMP from computer B to computer A. So computer B must know how to get to computer A. So your problem in this case computer B, the linux box does not know how to reach the XP. This is usually a route problem or a firewall problem that stops the ICMPs type 0 [Echo request] and 8 [Echo reply]. 1. Does the firewall allows for pings? 2. Yast > Network card > Address set via DHCP or fix IP, if fixed IP, name server and routing 3. Check route as administrator: # route -- Thanks http://www.911networks.com When the network has to work
