Contact the ISP that you plan on hosting your domain about this. They probably have a preferred registrar. As far as limitations and advantages, there are no limitations (except for .gov), but the advantage is proper marketing. .com - Commercial Site .org - Non-Profit Organization .net - Network Service Providers (ISPs, backbones) .gov - Government Agency .edu - Educational Institute -- -=|JP|=- Jon Pennington | Atipa Linux Solutions -o) jpennington@atipa.com | Kansas City, MO /\\ 816-241-2641 x107 | http://www.atipa.com _\_V -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

.com - Commercial Site .org - Non-Profit Organization
.org is NOT just for NPO's, it is for miscellaneous organizations.
.net - Network Service Providers (ISPs, backbones) .gov - Government Agency .edu - Educational Institute
Don't also forget: .mil - Military Installations .int - International Organizations -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

IIRC .edu is also limited, you have to provide proof that your a institute of learning (I don't know what is accepted as proof).
), but the advantage is proper marketing.

Colleges/Universities... High Schools, etc. do not qualify for an .edu domain (at least, according to the spec's, I won't deny that probably some have squeaked through against the rules *G*) D -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

There are a bunch of registries on the net, but I can tell you from personal experience that buying your own domain is only the beginning, which is why you should heed Jon's advice and buy from a full service provider (or at least consider the cost in your purchasing decision) - full service meaning: web access & nameserving. Otherwise, you will end up, like I did, thinking that $50 ($30 in my case) for two years, with a URL (www.stuarthall.net) is a good deal - that doesn't go anywhere. I got lucky and had a fellow Linux enthusiast agree to nameserve/web direct my pages. Thanks Thomas B. Stuart Good luck!
