Hello, I don't understand why, but since I activated the scsi emulation in the 2.2.10 kernel of my SuSE 6.2 (in order to use a IDE cdr/rw), my modem is always "busy" when I try to launch KPPP. First, my modem on ttyS1 doesn't operate, second, obviously... the cdr doesn't operate no more. I'm trying to declare it as /dev/scd0 (it is the master on the second ide port), as it is often describe in many manuals. But someone told me that a scdx device is only in read only mode ...! (cdrecord -scanbus tells me: no scsi device found) Well, to be brief, I'd like to use my CDR AND my modem. Thanks ever so much in advance, and sorry for my poor skills concerning my english, and Linux). Your CD drive should only appear as scd0 if it is a 'real' SCSI CD drive. Since you are using an IDE drive, it will probably show up as sg0 or something similar. One thing you have to do is get rid of IDE CD-ROM support from the kernel, otherwise the IDE CD driver will claim ownership of the CD drive before the generic SCSI support has woken up. This can be fixed by recompiling your kernel without IDE CD support, or by adding hdc=ide-scsi to the end of the LILO prompt. If you do it the LILO way, and usually boot a kernel named 'linux', then the prompt would need to look as follows: LILO: linux hdc=ide-scsi ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ you type this This is, of course, assuming that hdc is your CD-R. If you did already get rid of IDE CD support from the kernel, then make sure that the generic SCSI module is loaded (with 'lsmod'). If it isn't, load it with 'modprobe sg ide-scsi' and see if cdrecord finds it. One other thing you might want to do if you *do* decide to recompile your kernel is to leave out the 'probe all LUNs' feature from the kernel, as most people don't need this.
Well, to be brief, I'd like to use my CDR AND my modem.
Well, I'm afraid I can't really helps you with the modem part - I can't really see how SCSI modules will affect it, but...

Hey, don't worry about it. :) Hope that helps, Chris -- __ _ -o)/ / (_)__ __ ____ __ Chris Reeves /\\ /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / ICQ# 22219005 _\_v __/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\ -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

OK, I stand corrected :( The rest of the advice should still hold though ;-) Chris -- __ _ -o)/ / (_)__ __ ____ __ Chris Reeves /\\ /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / ICQ# 22219005 _\_v __/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\ -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
