[opensuse] Unable to open Dos! error message
Hello I am new to the Linux world and I am attempting to load OPENSUSE on my PC. I have down loaded the ISO files and used an ISO burner to burn them to CD. I made the first CD bootable. When I try to boot up on that CD, I get the message: Unable to open DOS! Any key to retry. What does that mean and what do I need to do to install SUSE on my machine? Thanks for any information. You should've skipped that part. The prebuild isos are bootable without any user action.
What does that mean and what do I need to do to install SUSE on my machine?
If you don't want to burn another set of discs you could try a boot-floppy bootup with installation source from your CDs. This list isn't meant for problems like yours. As this list is now a general discussion list are there any ground rules setup that people should adhere to and where are they posted. Kenneth, Thanks for the information. As I said, I am new to the Linux world and I am trying to learn. What group do I need to subscribe to in order to get this type of question answered? Then you are saying that Rajko does not have the authority to make the statement he did about the list now being open to all discussions? And saying that nobody cares is wrong, I for one do care and if the list should not be used for problems then it should be maintained as such. The only problem is there was no formal statement as to the intended use of this list and if there was one it was not enforced. I'm not trying to start any argument about this list and its use but if a list is created for a particular goal that goal needs to be stated somewhere so it can be adhered to. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998
Kenneth Schneider wrote:

I would be glad if it was so. Nor Rajko nor me nor... except probably Sonja have authority to say what are really the opensuse lists good for. Houghi tried to maintain consistency and was so much attacked he resigned the list. I tried the same with nearly the same result
of this list and if there was one it was not enforced. I'm not trying to start any argument about this list and its use but if a list is created for a particular goal that goal needs to be stated somewhere so it can be adhered to.
this don't seems the point of view of the last resort authority... look at the numerous discussions that are certainly easy to find in the archive. I understood (but this is my personal understanding) that the better way should be to create a new opensuse-life/status/whatever@opensuse.org to receive the discussion about the community and let the opensuse@.. to anything else, but I don't see here http://lists.opensuse.org/archive/ any such list. so I give up... jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://dodin.org/galerie_photo_web/expo/index.html http://lucien.dodin.net http://fr.susewiki.org/index.php?title=Gérer_ses_photos

It was, originally, but not prominently and has not been *enforced*. There have been literally miles of discussion with no *clear* resolution. Not if your CD content is "opensuse-<blah>.iso". I suspect it will be possible to use those discs during installation, but as a new linux user I recommend erasing those CD-RW and burn a new. You did use CD-RW for something like a distribution that will work forever after installation, right? ;) Pete

Just burn iso image. Can't be easier. To check is it OK, put disk in CDROM and look in explorer. If you see only one file ending with iso, your iso image burner doesn't work. If you see few directories and files like on FTP server, than it is probably OK. For instance Nero is good burning software. -- Regards, Rajko. please, do not top post. This makes it very difficult to people like me that come in the middle with the solution to give a correct answer :-) you mistaken when burning the cd. You already downloaded ISO images, that is real cd images. they must be written AS CD not AS FILES. With windows/nero, this i on the "writer" menu, on Linux K3b on the tools menu and you don't need to make it bootable, it's already. Just burn the image jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://dodin.org/galerie_photo_web/expo/index.html http://lucien.dodin.net http://fr.susewiki.org/index.php?title=Gérer_ses_photos

Jonny, look how I edited your post. This is chronological order that you get if your answer is written after mine, and it is called bottom posting. It is easy to read. The way you did it is top posting and it fits for single answer, but it messes up chronology for 3 and more followups. The top posting is not forbidden here (there are places where is), but it is not welcome either. What most readers here do is to ignore top posters. So if you need answer please use bottom posting. The answer to your question is, yes, but not with same options as you did. So far I recall even XP needs external program like mentioned Nero to be able to burn iso image. What is iso image? It is byte by byte copy of CD, from byte 1 to 600 and something millions. What is the difference to normal copy? Long story, I'll try to find reference and post put it to en.opensuse.org, but in short, normal file copy can be done after you have file system, that means after formatting the disk. For disk image it is not necessary to have file system, better to say even if one exists it will be overwritten. The iso image is one of special cases, it is disk image of CD. I hope that you understand now what happened, windows simply made file system on CD and copied your iso file instead to burn byte by byte without previous formatting. -- Regards, Rajko. Thanks,
There is also no simple answer to newcomer. First you will be better off with Thunderbird. Look at http://www.mozilla.org I use it even for windows as it has spam filtering built in, and many other features that prevent spammers to get your email address. Second when you reply remove signature including "-- " because most good mail software doesn't quote signature. The above is manual "cut" and "paste as a quote" as it wasn't quoted automatically. Third if you really have toyota.com mail address than use it, otherwise find something else that for sure is not in use. Mail program looks for character @ to declare mail address valid. So nospam@nospam.nospam is valid for program, and no mail server in the world will complain about invalid address. Now to the question. You may use suse-linux-e@suse.com, but be patient, enable threading that will group messages, and be prepared for a lot of mails every day. Other than that you can look for web forums. The openSUSE has none right now, but they consider the idea. For the beginner is probably better to use usenet (newsgroups). Thunderbird can do that too. Look with your provider what is the name of news server. It is usually your Internet provider domain with news or nntp instead of www, like: news.<internet provider domain>.com nntp.<internet provider domain>.com On your provider news server you can look for alt.os.linux.suse . Independent from your provider you can set up news://support-forums.novell.com as news server and browse the list that you get when click on subscribe to find those with opensuse in the name. BTW, thanks for you posts, as they gave me idea what articles are missing on opensuse.org. -- Regards, Rajko.
