SuSE 9.0: kernel modules not found after upgrade from k_athlon-2.4.21-286 to k_athlon-2.4.21-291
Hi all. On a SuSE 9.0 system, kernel modules are not found after a kernel upgrade from k_athlon-2.4.21-286 to k_athlon-2.4.21-291. /var/log/messages shows that the wrong modules.dep is searched for: Jun 10 08:50:45 localhost modprobe: modprobe: Can't open dependencies file /lib/modules/2.4.21-286-athlon/modules.dep (No such file or direc tory) Fortunately, switching back to k_athlon-2.4.21-286 was easy. Has anybody encountered the same problem? Or is it just me? Greetings Sven

Hello, Did you run the command "mkinitrd" after upgrade ? Michel

Yes, I think so, because I used YaST Online Update to upgrade this package. I thought YaST runs mkinitrd (also specified in the rpm). Sven

Only when updating the kernel and then -not- rebooting. You have to reboot after updating the kernel. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998 "The day Microsoft makes something that doesn't suck is probably the day they start making vacuum cleaners." -Ernst Jan Plugge

Sure. The reported error occurred during the reboot. Sven

Try depmod -a ?

On an identical machine, the upgrade worked perfectly. So it looks like the problem was caused by some special problems on this _one_ machine; the reported problem should not occur somewhere else. Sven

If the modules exist, "depmod -ae k_athlon-2.4.21-291" will create modules.dep. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce ... Hamradio License G3VBV, Keen licensed Private Pilot Retired IBM Mainframes and Sun Servers Tech Support Specialist Microsoft Windows Free Zone - Linux used for all Computing Tasks
