Cannot mount reiserfs-partition
I have lost the file-servers data-harddisk. One of out company's file-servers has its user-data on a 41 GB IBM Deskstar ide-disk. The disk is formatted with 1 reiserfs-partition. Something strange happened to the OS (SuSE 7.2 pro), where it could not boot the system, so I ended up reinstalling it (updated existing system) again with 7.2. When the update finally was done without loosing configurations on the system-harddisk, I could not get in contact with the data-disk. I found another spare harddisk, and used a ot of time reinstalling from last nights backup - it was first working day after christmas, so very few had saved anything that day. When I try to get in contact with the original data-disk it says: fdisk -l /dev/hdc Disk /dev/hdc: 256 heads, 63 sectors, 5005 cylinders. Device: /dev/hdc1, Start: 1, End:5005, Blocks: 40202631, Id: 83, System: Linux mount -t reiserfs /dev/hdc1 /31 answers: Mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdc1, or too many mounted file systems. Can you help me to get in contact with the data on the disk?
I believe your superblock may be corrupted. The util to research is 'reiserfsck', which does a barrage of different things to try to fix reiserfs partitions. So grab a bootdisk / rootdisk combo with 'reiserfsck' (I believe the SuSE CD's rescue mode has this), and here's a couple of options you should add when first running it (all information taken from reiserfsck(8) man page): --fix-fixable, -x have reiserfsck to recover corruptions which can be fixed w/o --rebuild-tree when it is runnig in check mode. Corruptions which can be fixed so far: bad pointers to data blocks, wrong directory's st_size and st_blocks, directories entries pointing to nowhere can be deleted Try to mount the partition (read-only) and see where that gets you. If that still doesn't do it, try running 'reiserfsck -- rebuild-sb /dev/hd?' and this should work. As a last resort, try '--rebuild-tree': --rebuild-tree This rebuilds filesystem tree using leaf nodes found on the device. Normally, you do not need this, but if you have to rebuild tree - please backup whole partition first or at least the most important data if you can mount the partition. Of course, back up the partition (if you can), just in case. Also, I suggest you contact the reiserfs mailing list [http://www.namesys.com/mailinglist.html] and see what version of reiserfsck is recommended. I tell you this is because pre13 is out, and in the past, the developers always told posters to pick the up the latest version [ftp://ftp.namesys.com/pub/reiserfsprogs/pre/]. Try to mount the partition (read-only) and see where that gets you. If that still doesn't do it, try running 'reiserfsck -- rebuild-sb /dev/hd?' and this should work.
Same output about no reiserfs format on the partition.
As a last resort, try '--rebuild-tree':
