[opensuse] usage of gpm in terminal (TW)
The program gpm should allow me to use the mouse to copy and paste in a console session (ttyn to be clear, eg. tty2). When I try to use it in TW I am told that it is in sbin and requires sudo. Which I looked up and this has been explained for security reasons. The man page speaks about the x-server but does not mention if the x-server has to be started manually. But if I am running on tty7 a KDE desktop session, shouldn't the xserver already be running? I tried with sudo and with su - but both go through without complain and ... nothing happens. (sudo gmp) I tried to use the mouse after the command but this does not seem to work. Do I think wrongly or is there a way to use gpm in specific way to achieve this in TW? (This is mainly for learning reasons, since a text, that I am using currently, mentions the program in this usage). Thank you. _________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ Ihre E-Mail-Postfcher sicher & zentral an einem Ort. Start it as a service There is yast2 services-manager to start it. Or from commandline : sudo systemctl start gpm.service And there is also the traditional rcgpm script: sudo rcgpm start -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

If you are in KDE, you don't need any gpm. Only on the virtual consoles. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (10.8°C) http://www.hostsuisse.com/ - virtual servers, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Forget that.

It has to be started as service. Normally in level 5 gpm is stopped automatically, so it has to be restarted. It is usually compatible with graphics, but not always. I use gpm in Leap; if it is not broken in TW I can help you later with it, now I'm too busy. There was a yast module to configure it, but it has been removed. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. I do not know or have not experienced gpm being stopped in "level 5", ie: graphical.target, but to utilize it in the tty#'s aiui it must be started as a service and then is available in all levels/display targets. service gpm enable service gpm start should suffice and ensue -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet freenode -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Ok, you have to edit "/etc/sysconfig/mouse". I don't know for sure what variables are needed for gpm. Some were used in the past for X. The settings below work for a logitech tracman marble+. probably for many others. Posibilities are in the man page, or should be. But, try some settings, start service, try, no? stop service and change settings. MOUSEDEVICE="/dev/psaux" or perhaps MOUSEDEVICE="/dev/mouse" MOUSETYPE="exps2" GPM_PARAM="" FULLNAME="Intelli/Wheel mouse (Aux-port)" not needed: XMOUSEDEVICE="/dev/psaux" BUTTONS="3" WHEELS="1" XEMU3="no" GPM_REPEAT="" - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. Actually given the meager explanation in the chapter I would not have any chance to make it work on a virtual console (tty2 e.g.). Now I am going to try to start it as a service and in case to follow the suggestion of Carlos for the mouse. Neat, thank you all! _________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ Ihre E-Mail-Postfächer sicher & zentral an einem Ort. gpm is a must have those few times graphics are dead; you have some command in a cheat file or notes and want to paste in another console - well, gpm allows that. It also gives mouse support in some of the few console programs that use the mouse. I just tried in this laptop with a touchpad. Handling is difficult (or I'm not used to it in the touchpad) but it works. The configuration is: cer@Legolas:~> egrep -v "^[[:space:]]*$|^#" /etc/sysconfig/mouse MOUSEDEVICE="/dev/input/mice" MOUSETYPE="imps2" GPM_PARAM="" GPM_REPEAT="" cer@Legolas:~> Try it. It is good to have it configured and ready for the day you need it. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from openSUSE 15.1 (Legolas))
