Ummmmm. This, as pointed out, is standard procedure. I do consulting and I'm not going to support something for someone that isn't gonna pay me if a contract is in play. Duaine
Hi Duaine, To begin with, your post really should be on a windows list or forum. That said, I have had several dealings with Dell and found them courteous and helpful, even when discussing Linux installs and problems. If someone came to you with problems with an organ bought elsewhere, how long would you offer free advice? Also, did you get the original install disk with the laptop? Dell is required to provide one if the REGISTERED CUSTOMER requests one. Depending on the length of time since you bought the laptop, you might be able to obtain the sellers name from Ebays customer resolution center. Tom -- “What we do for ourselves dies with us. Oh, but you don't get the point. You show up at the DMV with a car and try to register it without the previous owner signing over the pink slip and you wonder why they won't help you and then complain about it on an unrelated list? How bright do you think you look? Did you buy support with the computer? If not, then why would you think they would support you? You cannot compare a car to a laptop. First, the owner of the car is important for legal reasons, like license plate, involvement in accident, traffic offense, etc. Second, not the seller or car maker requires that info, it's the government (not taking into account warranty period). I completely understand Duaine. IMO the support should go with the equipment whoever is the owner. It should be enough to give a serial number or other ID printed on the device to satisfy the seller/supporter that the customer is eligible for the support. I can't either understand Dell's attitude. Such a big company could even give support to someone who is not officially eligible. They wouldn't be poorer. As for the offtopic subject: it really does not belong to openSUSE list, but since Duaine is member of this list and not a dell list or windows list he turned to this list. I understand this. Not quite the same. One cannot run linux on birth-control pills, but one /can/ do so on a Dell laptop. I agree that questions about XP are off-topic, but a general remark about Dell support being difficult is not quite so off-topic and a warning to those who might consider a Dell box. -- Tony Alfrey tonyalfrey@earthlink.net "I'd Rather Be Sailing" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Ummm... This is an openSUSE list, not Dell. However, many notebook computers have dual functions on the "F" keys. My ThinkPad, by default, requires the "Fn" key to be pressed to get the standard F functions. However, there is a BIOS setting where I can change that so that the F keys work as normal and the Fn key is used to enable the other functions. I suspect that Dell is similar. Also, that computer could be as much as 4 years old and likely out of warranty. Would you expect a car dealer to provide free service on an out of warranty car? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I PURCHASED AN INSPIRON 910 OFF OF EBAY - WITH NO KNOWLEDGE OF THE PREVIOUS OWNER.
DELL HAS - 6 TIMES - REFUSED TO HELP ME ANSWER A - SHOULD BE - COMMON KNOWLEDGE QUESTION.
HOW DO I TURN ON THE FUNCTION KEYS (F1-F10) WITHIN WINDOWS XP.
I HAVE GOTTEN HUNG UP ON 3 TIMES.
AND UNTIL I CAN GET THE ORIGINAL OWNERS' INFO (NAME, ADDRESS, ETC) TO TRANSFER THE OWNERSHIP IN MY NAME - THEY ARE - PLAIN - OUT - REFUSING - TO TALK TO ME.
If you have one of those stupid keyboards with an F-LOCK (function-key lock) botton, turn it on. It's a CAPS LOCK for the function keys. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
