About all the test mails to the list
There doesn't have to be 15-20 mail with 'test' or 'is the list down' There is an archive at lists.suse.com/archive. If there hasn't been a new entry there, odds are the list is down. There is a test list, which you can subscribe to at test-list-subscribe@suse.com - if you can't, odds are the list server is malfunctioning, or you will get an error message explaining what the problem is. There is an admin, who doesn't always monitor this list, but whom you can make aware of any problems at suse-linux-e-owner@suse.com, assuming it's a local suse-linux-e problem, or ml-admin@suse.com if it's a general list server problem.

It was so obvious, I didn't even check, mail was getting through from elsewhere, so the list had to be down. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce ... Good information Anders. Thanks. I'm guilty of a double post during that time. Only after I sent it did I notice that the last post that had come through from Ken Schneider that I had seen 3 hours earlier was still sitting at the top of my suse-linux-e folder. I didn't know about test-list-subscribe@suse.com. I did check the archive, but the time difference threw me at first. Looks like its GMT+2. I'm GMT-9, 11 hours behind, so what looked like new posts were actually old posts (It's already tomorrow there right now, based on my time). Greg Wallace

Hey. You DID get the last word in Friday, so to speak! Actually, there was some SPAM after your post, but I, naturally, didn't count that. Greg W.

Correct - if we except spam, that does get there, surprisingly :-/
There is a test list, which you can subscribe to at test-list-subscribe@suse.com - if you can't, odds are the list server is malfunctioning, or you will get an error message explaining what the problem is.
True also. I have used it now and then. It is documented on this list FAQ.

Unfortunately, when the list are down, those addresses are also broken, because they are handled by the list server, that is down. Unless there is a an admin address outside :-? That's why I informed Feedback, and got no response either, this time. On previous occasions, they answered. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

Please post /etc/postfix/master.cf (without the comments) and the output of the command "postconf -n".
clearly hotmail.com can be found, but not by postfix
Is the postfix server also the gateway for your internet connection or is the connection provided by another server/router? Sometimes it happens that postfix needs to refresh its configuration when your internet connection has changed. Especially if your /etc/resolv.conf is changed by dhcp. What is the content of /var/lib/postfix/etc/resolv.conf, if it exists? If you stop and start postfix, what messages appear in the logs?

Do you have problems with any outside host or only with hotmail.com?
If at all possible i do not want the smtp server from my ISP as a smart host. I have read somewhere that postfix is able to send a message directly to the smtp server of the recipient.
That is the default setting. Please be aware that some servers, especially those of big ISPs, will refuse to accept mail directly from your server if you are behind a dialup connection without a static ip.
DNS appears to work properly but postfix does not seem to use it. I do not run postfix ch rooted. Is that a recuirement?
No, but I suspect that you DO run postfix chrooted, so please post master.cf to clear up that point.
Does SuSE version matter to run postfix? Like in suse 9.0 postfix does not use dns or hosts or named or resolv.conf or ns switch.conf or named
No, postfix definitely needs host resolution.
. But suse 9.3 or higher postfix does us all of the aforementioned?
Yes, postfix provides much more that those basic requirements. (^-^) Sandy

Postfix does not deal with the main address, only the Mail eXchangher (MX) addresses, so the relevant queries are: host -t mx hotmail.com dig hotmail.com mx HTH, Jeffrey
