It is impossible (for now) to clone video DVD. Use dvdbackup for this. To copy a data DVD: Tools/DVD/Copy Sunny -- Get Firefox http://www.spreadfirefox.com/?q=affiliates&id=10745&t=85

I'm glad I didn't know it was impossible when I did it. The video dvd wasn't a copyrighted movie, it was a dvd video of my son's wedding. Only 2 or 3 gig in size if I remember correctly. Now on a normal, copyrighted movie, I expect I would have some problems, but to say you can't copy videos is not correct. Using 9.2. In k3b > tools > dvd > copy dvd worked fine on it. Doug

Even if you receive a DVD of your cousin's wedding which, for some reason, he decided to protect, you might still be able to copy it if you have libdvdcss installed.

Yes, I admit that my verbage was not right. In my eyes video DVD is 7+ GB, encrypted :) All else is data :) Sunny -- Get Firefox http://www.spreadfirefox.com/?q=affiliates&id=10745&t=85

I'll stand corrected, but there is nothing to *physically* prevent original DVD movie backups. No silly copy-protection schemes. CSS is something in the VOB files themselves isn't it? The only other obstacle, as you say, was the large size. I've got a dual-layer, so theoretically I should be able to make a perfect duplicate backup of my original LOTR discs. (I haven't tried this, as the drive isn't installed yet.) I'd like to know if anyone disagrees with me... -- Steve Boddy

Steve, it doesn't work that way. CSS is not only in the files. I.e. I guess it has to do something with the media descriptor as well, and the blanc media you write on has a different one. I have tried to copy that way a DVD5 encrypted DVD, and the result was unrecoverable. When you invoke pure disk copy, or file by file copy libdvdcss is not invoked to unscramble the video stream. And after that the new copy has some part of the key part missing, and it can not be played/descrambled any more. At least this was my experience. So, even with dual-layer burner, you should use something like dvdbackup to rip and decode the dvd to your hdd, and after that you can burn it back. Sunny P.S. while on the topic :), does anyone knows where the region code byte resides. In which file, etc.? I.e. if I have not CSS, but region coded DVD, I would like to know what to change. All my googleing just showed that there is such a byte :), but I can not find where :) Cheers -- Get Firefox http://www.spreadfirefox.com/?q=affiliates&id=10745&t=85

I found this one. It is byte 35 (23H) in VIDEO_TS.NFO. It is bit coded mask for the allowed regions, so 00H enables all regions. This is a good article about this (and a good perl script included): http://busy-bee.net/blog/ Cheers Sunny -- Get Firefox http://www.spreadfirefox.com/?q=affiliates&id=10745&t=85

Hi Kanak, This subject has been covered before. It's not as simple as putting in the DVD and clicking copy. You need DVDShrink and dvdbackup. If you use "site:lists.suse.com SLE 2004 backing up movie dvd's" you should find what you are looking for. I think it was also covered at the beginning of this year to. Hope this helps Martin
