[opensuse] Installation issue(s) for openSuSE11.4
I have gotten to the point where I try to avoid using YaST tools as much as possible, but the one time I must rely on them is when I do an upgrade/install of a new openSuSE system. (Since the usage of YaST is deeply embedded in the installation scripts) And true to form, it once again proved to be a challenge. In particular, two areas failed badly on me this time, so thought I would report it. Let me know if these should be reported as bugs. 1st. The bootloader that sets up the GRUB menu's failed to find and merge in any of the menus from other openSuSE partitions. I had both 11.2 and 11.0 versions installed, in separate partitions and the YaST->Bootloader failed to find either one. I have a suspicion that since 11.2 was installed as an image that has something to do with the failure, but have no explanation for why it failed to find the 11.0 menus or create an entry for it in the boot menu. (When I was running 11.2, I could chainload 11.0 just fine.) I gave up on YaST, and simply hand copied the various menu entries from the old boot menus into the new one for 11.4 and all is working fine. 2nd. The network configuration got the udev names eth0 and eth1 assigned backwards to the two network interface cards I have on my system. Since that would have caused serious problems for many of my scripts/software, I attempted to reverse the assignment, once again via the Yast Network Settings tool, and found that so seriously messed up the network that I was unable to proceed with the installation and had to start over. The second time I just avoided trying to set up the network during the installation process, and waited until the system was fully booted up. Tried again with YaST to change the udev names and found YaST again became quite confused. After a lot of head-scratching and guesswork, I simply rebooted. That worked, SO apparently YaST has modeled itself after Windoz and requires a reboot now in order to get udev name changes applied? If so, then trying to set up the network during an installation process needs to be rethought a bit as it can cause a LOT of confusion!!! Just an FYI.. Been a frustrating experience doing what should have been a simple upgrade...
