Sorry about the delay.... Here's what I did for a laptop here... In the XF86Config file under the section for your graphics card (do a search for "neomagic") add the following line to stop X using all 2.5Mb of memory. VideoRam 1536 This will give you a 1024x768 16Bit maximum resolution. In the /etc/modules.conf add the following alias char-major-14 nm256_audio alias sound on alias midi on And finally you need to enable the sound. So in your /etc/init.d/boot.local add the following /sbin/modprobe soundcore /sbin/modprobe nm256_audio Hope this solves your problems. RikD.

If I remeber rightly the graphics card and sound card share the memory on this Dell. You need to ensure that X doesn't take all the memory that is provided between the two. I set the video Memory to 1.5Mb I think.

Unfortunately this restricts you to a small desktop (1024x768) but it can be gotten to work. I don't have this laptop with me today, but I should be able to sneak a look tommorow and see what I did to get it working and let you know then..

It took me hours to install sound om my latitude cpia NM220/MediaMagic256AV/SuSE 7.2Pro. The recommended snd-card-nm256.o drive just wouldn't work. Things began looking up when I switched it to nm256_audio. You'll find it in /lib/modules/2.4.10-4GB/kernel/drivers/sound/nm256_audio.o.

modules.conf alias char-major-14 nm256_audio options nm256_audio force_load=1 /e

No luck so far, seem I will spend hours too......
