[opensuse] vlc regressing?
A couple of days ago zypper installed a number of updates to the KDE 4.8 files I am using - including some to vlc. Of course following this, vlc would not work and I therefore had to do what everybody has been doing for a long time and that is install vlc from videolan.org as a "one-click install". Following this, vlc worked again - *BUT*, unlike to what has been the case for the past years, when I switch to another workspace/desktop vlc audio goes MUTE while vlc continues running, in the background, on the workspace where I always run it (Desktop #6). (This going mute is similar to what happens in, say, the game Pysol - Tri Peaks which goes into PAUSE mode when you switch to another desktop.) I also have xine installed but xine still behaves as it has over the years: the sound continues when I switch desktops. Has anyone else struck this annoyance and/or knows how to overcome this new behaviour by vlc, please? (BTW, there were some updates yet again to vlc earlier today [my time] but these have not changed anything. And Yes, I have checked the settings for anything obvious to cause this new behaviour - but probably missed the obvious one.) Don't understand this maneuver. I haven't had to perform it. But I also do not use videolan repo; I use packman except for the codecs. Also, istr that there was problems mixing videolan/packman but do not know if that is still true.

I have been doing it this way for a very long time - for so long, in fact, that I don't bother doing it any other way.
Also, istr that there was problems mixing videolan/packman but do not know if that is still true.
I have heard this as well. I do have the packman repo selected and perhaps this is where the problem(s) come from; I don't know whether yesterday's update to vlc came from the packman repo.

"Clementine"? First time I hear of it. Will go and look at it. (She doesn't wear shoeses which are herring boxes without topses, does she? :-) .) Ahh, further to what I wrote. I just had a look at clementine in the Software Manager and I don't want something to play audio file or stream music off the internet. vlc or xine can do that with ease. I use vlc, or xine, to watch television and/or record a TV program (using vlc, xine cannot do this) as my primary use of vlc. I still have this problem with vlc in 12.1 as I describe above, but I finally got 12.2 Milestone 1 to install and behave properly. In 12.2 Milestone 1 vlc behaves as before and without losing sound when one changes the desktop/workspace. As there is no version of vlc in videolan.org for oS 12.2 yet I had to install vlc from (?)packman. Maybe this is where the difference lies? Probably. I have 2 tumbleweeds, a 12.2 factory and an 11.2 evergreen and do not have the problem but I *only* use videolan for *the* restricted requirement not provided by packman. Usually their package versions of vlc are the same within a day or two. Yes, as I already stated, I have heard "don't mix-em" but I have installed vlc from the videolan.org using the '1-click insall' there (and therefore have their repo in my list of repos), and also have both the packman and libdvdcss repos selected - and I have never had any problem until this last update a few days ago. Well, your bit about using "zypper dup --from...." only generated a list of files a mile long which dup was going to replace :-( . So, naturally, I aborted this process. I looked in Software Manager and found that the vlc I have installed is version 1.9.99 (aka 2.0) from the videolan repo [which purports to be a preview of the next version]. This version was installed on 12 February. The previous version I had installed was 1.1.13 and it is also the version which comes in Milestone 1 of 12.2. This version I believe is packaged by 'dimstar'. I'll think about this and if I do decide to go back to 1.1.13 then I will delete the current version I have and then do- zypper in --from <packmanrepo> Or simply use YaST to do the installation. I just 'switched on' vlc by accident, instead of xine, to watch TV and just as "a dare", as a "throw away line" so to say, I switched Desktops to prove what happened last night, which I wrote about above. Lo and behold, and 'cut off my arms and call me Venus'[$$], there was no loss of sound! There WERE some updates to vlc this morning (my time). So something there got vlc to behave re the sound as it did in the past. [$$] An old Russian expression. Aahh, Patrick, oi tink you be in need of a rest, oi does :-) . zypper up --from <repo> -D vlc comes back with an error message that "--from" is a no-no. *However*, dropping "--from" results in being told that zypper won't install vlc 'cause the version already installed (1.9.99 which I have) is 'later' than its v1.1.13.
