OK I have a CD labled Pro-office which dropped through the door this morning. The notes say Run 'Patch CD Update', but on mine that fails to find the CD. I think the problem is that I have a DVD, and a CDWriter and neither of them are accessed as /dev/cdrom. SO how do I get YaST to look at a different location for the Patch CD? or map /dev/cdrom to on of the physical drives -- Lester Caine ----------------------------- L.S.Caine Electronic Services
As I said somewhere else, the problem is not the answer it's the question. I've found the answer in support once I asked the right question - needed to add a link ( ln -sf /dev/sr0 /dev/cdrom - if anybody is listening ) -- Lester Caine ----------------------------- L.S.Caine Electronic Services
I have ordered this CD as well, Yesterday evening, so I hope to get it soon. Since I have a DVD as well, and a CD-RW, I get this problem as well. In fact, I already saw it when I tried to use KOnCD, so I am happy you found the solution. Since I am a newbie, I am not sure what the solution is, do you need to type that line into a konsole? And next time you boot, you need to re-type it? More and more people will have a DVD instead of a CD-ROM, so it would be good if SuSE would be able to improve on this. So what are we saying where,....do not get the $25 disk and go with the Sun $79 one? Forrest On Sat, 29 Jun 2002 10:49:41 +0100, a large badger frolicked about on your keyboard, and out came:

No, I don't think that is a correct conclusion. Just apply what you need to do to make your dvd player work. The SuSE disk comes with patches for SuSE8 and the complete KDE3.0.1, so it has even more value. The SUN disk can be used to install Staroffice on Linux, but also on Windows (and MAC probably, if I recall that correct), I have not read the SuSE CD will support that, on the other hand that might not be of any interest to you, if you only use Linux. Go into console in superuser mode and type it in. ln -sf /dev/sr0 /dev/cdrom Seems to remember it after a reboot - probably because it is a link

I had trouble with the only being able to boot from the CD, so I get warning now when I try and use the DVD copy of the disks. That and not being able to use YOU from my machines as they need to go through a proxy <g> Forrest Halford wrote:

I don't see any mention of that BUT it seems that the SUSE disk only has the SUSE copy of StarOffice. So I will have to buy the Sun disk to get the windows version, in which case the SUSE was a waste of time. And they said that the disk was JUST A COPY OF THE SUN DISK. NOW we know the real reason why it's cheaper! -- Lester Caine ----------------------------- L.S.Caine Electronic Services
I just orded it. Nice of Suse to charge nearly $10 for shipping on a disk and a computer printed mailing label and to toss it in the UPS bin. Ah well.... Forrest On Sat, 29 Jun 2002 15:53:24 +0100, a large badger frolicked about on your keyboard, and out came:

I just ordered it too, but I think it is a bargain compared with the full price of Star Office 6.0. Hopefully, Star Office will have enough extra features over Open Office to justify the cost. Yes, I have heard that this is so, and I will be excited when it gets here, and then bummed when it does not easily install. Forrest On Sat, 29 Jun 2002 12:20:31 -0400, a large badger frolicked about on your keyboard, and out came:

OK ln -sf /dev/sr0 /dev/cdrom Fixes the problem of using a patch CD on machines with CDRecorders. HOW do I switch it off again so that I can use the software add/remove since that part of YaST has stopped detecting the media! I can't see a '-r' option in 'ln' help -- Lester Caine ----------------------------- L.S.Caine Electronic Services
